Hi Michele.
Thanks for getting back to me.
I did figure from the information in the 1870 online that Elizabeth probably
traces back to James or Richard. I didn't think to ask for a look-up in the
1860 census though. I found them in the index I use:
1860 Martin Co. Census Halbert Twnshp. James Ratliffe (Radcliff) pg. 925
Richard Ratliffe (Radcliff) pg. 909
Could someone see if either of these has a daughter Elizabeth abt. 10-12?
I have asked someone to check for me on the 1870 census to see exactly where
the family break is on page 323. It wasn't clear from the online
alphabetical listing. Are William and Elizabeth living with Jacob? Could
Jacob be her brother?
Thank you.
Gwen

It appears that there are two Rad(t)cliff families (in addition to
William...who being born in Ireland does not appear to be an immediate part
of either one..so it's not first cousins marrying).
I'd say your Elizabeth is the daughter of either Richard or James. It's not
circumstantial that they are living so close to these families. To
determine
which you might try reading the 1860 census for Martin Co., Halbert Twp.
Look for Richard or James to have a daughter Elizabeth aged 10-12. Or find
a
probate for either of these men.
