I sent this to INDAVIES-L and received no response. Perhaps someone in
Martin Co. knows the answer?
Abraham F. Stoy owned and operated a coal mine near Raglesville before
the turn of the (19th -> 20th) century.
The Indiana Coal Mine Information System contains a detailed map of Coal
Deposits near Raglesville, but does not identify which of these might be
related to the Stoy mine. Does anyone know the location of this old
mine? Was it a surface deposit or an underground mine?
The 1876 Baskin Forster Atlas shows only one location of coal in Van
Buren Twp., near the southeast corner of Section 3 of T 4N R 4W. Is this
relevant? The only other statements this particular map makes about coal
in Daviess Co. are south, along the Q & M RR east of Washington
(Montgomery and Cannelburg).
I have the Odon Quadrangle USGS map for coordinates.
Any other comments, e.g. historical, about this mine would also be most
welcome. STOY is in my extended family.
Thanks,
John Ragle
