Hi Dan Williams:
There has been some speculation about the spelling. Personally I think they are connected.
I have a letter written by Emily BROOKS about 1930 that says they were cousins. She was a
granddaughter of my Jeremiah RINEY/RANEY.
And now there is DNA testing being done by some RINEY, RANEY, RAINEY men. If any of these
folks have established a connection to my Jeremiah RINEY/RANEY through the DNA tests, I
would really like to know.
We don't know who were the parents of my ggg grandpa, Jeremiah RINEY/RANEY, so we
can't establish a positive connection, but many of them came from the same area in MD
and traveled about the same time to Washington County, KY in the 1790's, and traveled
again, in 1818, to Martin County, IN. That is when Jeremiah's spelling changed to
RANEY, in the census of 1820 (as well as a few others). It was RINEY in KY in 1810 and
1800. I don't know whose household he was in during the 1790 census. He was born in MD
between 1765 and 1770 and was m. in Washington County, KY 1797 or 1799 to Mary Joan
(SHEEHAN MOORE).
I can't help but wonder if the census taker spelled names how they thought they were
spelled, or possibly the people who gave the info to the census taker couldn't spell,
so names got changed (and ages).
Anyhooo, Mom was a RANEY and my ggg grandparents went from MD to KY to IN. And my gg
grandparents went from KY to IN, James Virgil RANEY was 9 at the time. He later married
Mary Helen (HOLLAND). My great grandparents John RANEY and Martha (JOHNSON) had 12
children in Martin Co, IN. Many of them stayed in the Martin County, IN area. My
grandparents Homer Thomas RANEY and Mary Dot (McCORD) went to Kansas City after they
married in 1905, so most of Mom's 11 siblings were born in the KC area.
Pop's (SAUSE) parents were from Daviess Co, IN and also went to Illinois where their
first 4 children were born, then to Kansas City where the next 3 were born.
