Carol,
I don't have much more on George W. Shirey than what I posted. I had no idea
he was ever in the hardware business. I am only interested in him in
connection with the Moberly family. His father's name may have been John
Shirey of PA. George W. was born in OH about 1833. As far as I can tell from
the censuses he had a Dry Goods Store in Dover Hill for many years, before
relocating to Loogootee. He was in Company C, one Hundred and Forty Sixth
Regiment, Indiana Infantry (Draft Officer, Captain) in the Civil War. Other
members of the Shirey family owned businesses in the area also. Shirey &
Campbell Grist Mill in Loogootee and M. Shirey & Son Furniture in Dover
Hill.
Among the probate papers of Sarah G. Moberly was her account at Shirey's Dry
Goods for a number of years. It is several pages long, and it's interesting
to see the items she purchased and what they cost. However, it appears that
whoever prepared the document (George W. himself or one of his clerks, I
suppose) listed her purchases and her payments in the same column, added
purchases and payments together, and submitted the total as a debt against
her estate. Whether this was done by accident or not, we'll never know! If
anyone is interested in seeing it, I'll type it and post it.
Carol

George W. Shirey was a partner of my grandfather, John Huebner, for
awhile
early in the century. At that time, they had a hardware/harness shop.
John bought out George's share and turned it into the Huebner Hardware
store
-- I do have pictures of that.
I'd love to know a little about George Shirey -- so far all I know is what
is
in the business records. (which, virtually is just the above
<G>)
