Message Board Post:
Does anyone know of, or can anyone search for, the headstones of anyone named Moberly (can also be spelled Mobley, Mobly, Mobberley, etc.), who died between 1840 and 1855, probably in Martin County, IN?
In particular I am searching for the headstones of Robert Moberly and his wife (whose name I do not know). They may or may not, be buried in the same cemetery. Robert Moberly owned property around Harrisonville (now Trinity Springs) in Martin Co., IN. The family lived there, but as Robert also owned property in Lawrence County, IN, and in Pike County, IN, I suppose there is a slight possibility that one of them could have been buried in one of those counties.
I might be able to discover the name of Robert Moberly's wife, if I could find the headstone of a female Moberly who died between 1840 and 1850. It's a long shot, but I've been searching for her for over 10 years! Martin County and Lawrence County would be the most likely places for her grave.
I would also like to find the headstone of their son, Winchester P. Moberly, who died around 1849 in Martin County. As the middle initial "P." occurs over and over in this family, I'd love to know what it stood for. Would like to know Robert's middle name as well -- his middle initial was "C."
I'd really appreciate any help with this!

Hi all just wanted you to know I have updated the Martin Co. IN Genweb site
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inmartin/
I also would like to this time and say that it be a big help to myself and to other Martin Co researchers if when you come across family hitories, one name studies, those High School graduation anouncements... deed, probates, Bible records, etc that you think about submitting what you have to the Martin Co Genweb site.
I have seen so many time where someone has posted great information here but never sends it to me or says hey put this on the Martin Co page so it can be of service to even more people. And I don't feel like I should have to chase people down asking permission. So while you are thinking of those you help by posting your information here on the message board or the Martin Co email list, please think about whether your material would be good to post on the Martin Co page too.
Thanks, Lori

you state martin , in., but you are on the martin county board, which do you mean??
Is there anyone who would be willing to search for, and make copies of,
deeds in the Martin County courthouse? Robert Moberly (also spelled Mobly,
Mobley, Mobberley, etc.) purchased land there probably between 1825 and
1850. He may have made several different purchases. I am trying to discover
the name of his wife and her name could be on a deed along with his.
A look at the probate index might also reveal her name. I think there was
only one Moberly family in Martin County at the time. Robert's wife probably
died between 1840 and 1850. If there is a female Moberly/Mobley listed in
the probate index, she would most likely be her.

THE BLOOMFIELD DEMOCRAT, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, March 30, 1939, Volume 78, Number 13, Page 1, Columns 6 & 7, “Veteran of Civil War is Feted on 100th Birthday.”
Residents of Martin County today are honoring Levi WILDMAN, a Civil War veteran who today is celebrating the one hundredth anniversary of his birth. He is the lone surviving Civil War veteran in Martin County.
Mr. WILDMAN is an only uncle of the Rev. George WILDMAN, pastor of the Switz City Christian Church and first deputy in the Greene County Recorder’s office. Rev. WILDMAN’s father, the late Jesse WILDMAN, was a brother and fought in the same company in the Civil War.
Uncle Levi WILDMAN, as he is affectionately known, makes his home with a son, Joseph WILDMAN in the Dover Hill community north of Shoals. Today his children with members of their families and intimate friends and neighbors, gathered at his home to pay him honor. He has not failed motionally since his birthday celebration last year and is able to be about the home and in more favorable weather is about the yard and farm. His prediction that he would live to be a hundred came true today.
As a boy he migrated with his family to Indiana from Ohio where he was born in 1839 in Columbus City. He is the last surviving member of a family of eight sons and daughters born to Joseph and Mary (WARTON) WILDMAN. Following the call issued by Abraham LINCOLN for volunteers, he entered the Union Army on August 6, 1863, becoming a member of the famous COMPANY F, 65th REGIMENT OF INDIANA INFANTRY.
He served as a messenger boy for General William T. SHERMAN at the battles of Shiloh and Lookout Mountain. At one time a bullet passed entirely through his body near a lung and he was forced to spend some time in one of the hospitals behind the rebel lines. He served until the close of the War when he returned to Martin County and to the home near Dover Hill where he had left a wife and two children when he enlisted in the army.
His first wife was Carolyn CALVIN and to them were born seven children, including Mattie and Ross WILDMAN, deceased, Gus WILDMAN, of Danville, Illinois; Ed WILDMAN, of Carlisle, Mrs. Nora SIMS of Dover Hill and Walter WILDMAN and Mrs. Flora HAMILTON, of Loogootee. After her death he married Rebecca DONAHEY, and to them the following children were born: Frank and Fred WILDMAN, deceased, Mrs. Lillie PRUITT of Indianapolis, Mrs. Clara SANDERS of Terre Haute and Joseph WILDMAN with whom he makes his home. He also has 56 grandchildren and a large number of great-grandchildren.
Mr. WILDMAN is proud of the fact he cast his first vote for Abraham LINCOLN for president.
Uncle Levi is now pointing in time when he can celebrate his 2nd birthday in his second century of life.

John Sanders, b. 1810 Brooke Co. VA was the son of Lewis Sanders and Prudence
Gamble. About 1824 Lewis and his family relocated to Tuscarawas County, Ohio
and relocated a second time, about 1851, to Martin County, IN.
They raised the following children: John (1810-1875); Edward (1814-1894);
Samuel (1816-1892), Elizabeth (1817-1884) married John Kail, Leonard Marlow;
Prudence (1821-x) married Benjamin McCausland; James Sanders, Sr.
(1829-1913); William Sanders (1835-young). John, Betsy and James relocated
to Indiana with their father and mother.
I descend from son Edward, brother to John, and have followed John through
his children only.
Hope this is of help.
Melissa

Hi Lori,
Thanks for the e-mail. My husband and I were trying to think of something to
do last weekend and I thought of Martin Co....... I didn't find hardly
anything to show him in the area and couldn't persuade him to drive down
there. Since then I have had a couple of e-mails telling of a couple of
things. Since we are going to a family reunion this weekend then will be
going to CA for my cousin's wedding vows renewal (20 yr.), it will be
sometime in Sept. before we could be in Martin Co... We like to drive to
different areas and explore. Our adventures help us entertain our kids and
grandkids.
My two nephews always get a laugh out of the things we accidentally find and
they can't wait till they are out of college and can travel around. When is a
good time for you?
Julie
When will you be in Martin Co? I live in West Baden
and if I can I'd be happy to meet you? I do know my
way around the area a bit... Not so good up in the
Crane area but the lower half of the county is all
right.

Could it be the same family?

The states covered are:
