There is a truly remarkable volume assembled by Bill Whorrall entitled
"A Photographic History of Martin County," copies probably
still obtainable from:
Bill Whorrall
R. R. 3, Box 24
Shoals, IN 47581
The volume contains a number of pictures concerning the area about which
you ask, as well as lots and lots of text for continuity. This volume is
much more than a picture book(!), and provides sumptuous genealogical
information. I recommend it highly.
John Ragle
My gggrandfather James BEST and his son William Edgar BEST resided in Martin
Co., IN for awhile. I
understand that James BEST was a ferryman at Williams. I have a picture of him
on a ferry, who would have
given a ferryman's license at that time? This would have been after 1877, and
before 1900 as James had moved
to Daviess Co., by 1890. Would there be somewhere to get a copy of his
ferryman's license now? Is there
anywhere there might still be a record.
I also understand that they also lived in Trinity Springs during that time. Are
there any good pictures anywhere
of the resort? I understand that Trinity Springs is now underwater? Is that
true?
I am also looking for information on Andrew J. BEST. He and his wife lived in
Martin Co., and thought I'd
heard that he was a coroner? Is there any information out there on him? I have
some but I'd like to have more.
He may not have been a coroner, but he was of some distinquishable career back
then. This would have been
around mid 1800's to early 1900's.
I'm trying to find a connection between him and James BEST. Andrew was the head
of the GAR after the
CW. He loaned James BEST $200.00 to buy a home. I'm trying to understand why,
unless there was a
relationship, such as brother's or uncle's, to have given a loan such as this.
The GAR wouldn't have done
anything like this would they? The mortgage on James' house said from Andrew J.
BEST, not fromt the GAR.
Could someone help me with this? I'm stuck
I cannot seem to find any information as to James & Andrew being brother's or
any other kind of relationship.
I have a census from 1850, but there is not an Andrew mentioned.
Thanks for the help in advance.

Here you will find helpful information regarding the mailing lists, what
they are, subscribing and unsubscribing, and other bits as to how they
should be used.

General Questions regarding Lists: (This is an important one)
http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help/mail5.html
Beyond the basic rules/guidelines set down by RootsWeb, list rules are up
to the discretion of the list owner. I am not a tough one, but I do ask that
you abide by the basic rules, and remain polite.
It is to your benefit to state the name, time frame, and area if
applicable, in the subject line. Many people subscribe to many lists, and
often will delete a message if the subject line doesn't reflect something
pertinent. That's a good way to miss out on something.
Getting information in the subject line, gives a heads up alert to others
that may be researching the same person/thing, or have information that may
be helpful to you.
When giving or asking for information, providing any details that you do
have, helps narrow things down, and simplifies the search. Looking for a
James Lewis, doesn't help much when there's about a zillion of them out
there. Boy, do I know. Any additional information that can be added, only
increases your chances of solving the puzzle.
I realize there will be times when someone just simply doesn't have
anything much to go on, and so it's not possible to add more. And we do all
have to start somewhere.
When replying to a message, please eliminate unnecessary text especially
if it is quite lengthy. Leaving a snippet of what you are replying to, will
clarify your reply, and make it more focused. Cleaning up the taglines and
things at the bottom, helps clear up space too.
Now I'm not going to whomp you if you don't, but if it gets to be too big
of a problem, I will remind you.
What I'd like to see here is people helping people, an exchange of
information, and a warm, friendly atmosphere.
I don't want anybody to be afraid to speak for fear of being jumped on,
I'm not that way. Every list owner is unique, and runs their lists in their
own way. That is ok.
I don't want to see any profanity, spamming, arguing, virus or hoax
messages, etc. Other than that, I don't ask a whole lot.
I may on occasion address an issue with someone privately. Though you all
may not see it, there is a lot more that goes on behind the scenes.
And please, if at any time you are having a problem, don't ever be afraid
to contact me. I really am easy to get along with. This is really your list,
and I am here to help when needed.

CLEMENTS on 9 Feb. 1830; lived in Casey CO, KY, and Martin CO, IN; died in
Daviess CO, IN, bet 1860-70.
Names of nine children were:
James Thomas;
Perlinia/Pauline m. Edward KIDWELL
Sarah Ann m. Pius CLEMENTS
Elza B. m. Lavina WARD
Susan Amanda m. John Lewis WARD
Joseph Green;
Priscilla Elizabeth m. Pius CLEMENTS (Are these two men the same?)
George A. m. Louise BARLITZ
Mary M. m. Henry SMITH
Who were Charles MILES' parents? I am interested in finding the death and
burial information for Charles and Elizabeth. However, I would be pleased
to discover anything more about the children as well. My connection is
Susan Amanda Miles Ward.

This is roll call information:
I am seeking any information about the family of Lewis (b. ca.1798) and
Margaret (Montgomery) WARD (b.1810).
In 1842, Lewis and Margaret Ward moved to Daviess CO. The 1850, 1860, and
1870 censuses showed this family in Alfordsville. However, many of the
children's marriages occurred in Martin CO.
Children were:
Martha Ann Ward ARVIN (William)
Catherine Ward CANNON (Isaac)
John Lewis Ward (Susan Amanda MILES) married in Loogootee
at St. John's Catholic Church
Rebecca Jane Ward BURCH (Michael A.)
Nancy Ann Ward SIMMERS (Thomas)
James Pius Ward (Martha Jane MILES)
Joseph Ezekiel WARD
Lucy Ann Ward QUEEN (Richard Marsham)
Hillary Ward (Sarah Jane BURCH)
Louvinia/Lavina Ward MILES (Elza B.) CLEMENTS (Bazel)
Mary Dorena Martina Ward STRANGE (John S.) buried at St. John's
Catholic Church cemetery in Loogootee.
Margaret Ward TEWELL (William)
Lewis must have died between 1870-80. Margaret was alive for the 1880
census where she was found living with her unmarried daughter Mary in
Martin CO.
I am most interested in finding the death and burial information for this
couple. However, I would be pleased to discover anything more about the
children as well. My connection is John Lewis Ward.
If anyone has access to a printed copy of the 1860 Martin County census,
I would very much appreciate knowing if John Lewis and Susan Amanda Ward
appear on it and, if so, what information is shown.
Thank you,

Deah,
Now might be a good time to review proper list use, including what goes on
the subject lines, and what information should be given in a query, and what
should be indicated in a reply. I think we have a few newcomers and they
may not be aware.
Also, replies like--"contact me directly" is kind of offensive to other
listers. Any responses to a query posted here, which contain valuable
genealogical data, should be posted on list too! (unless it is personal info
or private dialogue). That seems only fair.
Thanks!

Ragles entered Indiana about 1815-1820 and lived in the northern part of
Orange Co. My direct line of Ragles lived astride the northern end of the
Daviess-Martin County line from 1835 to about 1906. There is a familyplot
and satellite graves in the Raglesville Cemetery. The families KELLER,
RICHARDSON, TOON, KECK, TRUEBLOOD, CARPENTER all connect at least once, and
sometimes several different ways to this line, which begins with Peter
Ragle and his wife Margaret Wadsworth, my 2x GGparents. In addition, there
are other Ragle families in the New Albany and Washington areas, as well as
near Otwell. I have detailed files on many of these lines, but have nothing
on the KELLER, RICHARDSON, CARPENTER lines, which is a pity, as my GGF
Alonzo Ragle writes fondly about these close relatives of his in letters to
his sons in the years around 1895-1905.
My files are available for sharing at

I would be delighted to contact persons with information that connects with
mine.

The last few months people have been using INMARTIN-L(a)rootsweb.com in a way
that I find difficult to deal with. Queries are sent to the list
[legitimate], and answers are made to the list. It is the latter with which
I take issue.
Answers are fine, but only if you know the question that was asked. People
who RESPOND to the list are sometimes careless about identifying the query.
I am seeing responses which I might parody something like this:
"Mary:
I have some information about your line. Please contact me.
John"
I believe responses to the list would be much more useful if they included
a SHORT statement of the query to which the response is being made,
including the primary source of the query.
Just a suggestion.

Please note that I [John Ragle] didn't claim that the Crane carried out the
physical process of registering the cemeteries on their property, only that
they maintain a very useful booklet giving an inventory and detailed maps
of the cemeteries, which they will furnish free for the asking.
As to the location of Lost River and Columbia TWP, nbaker is quite correct.
They are at the other end of the state, or at least they were in 1870.
Sorry about that. I should have looked first and pulled the trigger later.
I am still hopeful to find someone who can help me out with Morton KELLER
and his line of descendents with Mary Ann Toon.

John brings up a good point. It is often hard to distinguish what is
being referred to with some replies. And in doing so, you might miss out on
finding information that someone else might be able to contribute.
Especially if someone new has come on board.
At this time if you wish, we may have a roll call of subscribers, and
have you all post who you are looking for. We do have new people who have
joined us, and someone might find a connection.
Please, in the subject line, do not just put "roll call." Type in the
name of the person at least, but better yet, who and where.
Let's see if someone can turn over a stone, and find an answer.

Angel,
The Fairview Cemetery is located in Halbert Twp. As far as I know the grave
of Jeremiah Tinkel has not been located.
Some of the Tinkle family are buried in Butler Cemetery that
is located in Lost River Twp. Mary Tinkle, wife of Jeremiah
is buried at Fairview.
I have a complete listing of all cemeteries in Martin Co.,
including the ones at Crane Naval Weapons Support Center
I started recording these cemeteries in 1963. The Martin Co.
Historical Society helped with the ones at Crane, IN.
If I can be of further help to you please let me know.

Angel...
Do you know anything about Mort Keller, a buddy of my GGF Alonzo Ragle?
Mort married Mary Ann Toon, the younger sister of Alonzo's wife Susan Ellen
Toon. Here is a piece from Harry Holt's book:
Mary Toon [wife of Morton Keller] is mentioned in "Churches of Martin
County" by Harry Q. Holt as one of a group of people who encouraged Bud
McCarter to seek an alternative to "Keck's Church" for use in worship
by Methodists who lived southwest of Keck's Church. The church which was
built was on 1.5 acres donated by Alonzo and Peter Ragle 2 miles
southwest of Keckville. It was surrounded by a spacious valley and near
enough to the Loogootee road for the convenience of the regular and
prospective membership...
The land mentioned is in Brown TWP, Martin Co. Mort Keller and Mary Ann
Toon were m. July 03, 1879. I don't know anything about their children, or
about Mort Keller's line, but would very much like to find out more.
WRT Tinkle, here are the 1870 census entries for Martin Co.:
Name Age POB Living Census page
in (TWP)
Tinkle Jerimiah 64 OH Columbia 311
Tinkle Mary 61 PA Columbia 311
Tinkle Andrew J 25 OH Columbia 311
Tinkle Creina? A 24 IN Columbia 311
Tinkle Mary E 0 IN Columbia 311

Tinkle Daniel B 24 KY Lost River 348
Tinkle Mary 24 IN Lost River 348
Tinkle Mary S 2 IN Lost River 348
Tinkle Thomas 0 IN Lost River 348
If the Tinkle farm you mention is in Lost River TWP then you would look in
the cemetery records of the Naval Weapons Depot at the Crane location in
northern Martin Co. They are built on land that contains 3 dozen old
cemeteries, which they have preserved and inventoried. You can contact them
at Crane Naval Depot, Public Relations, (812) 854-1640. They will send you
inventories of these old cemeteries.
Good luck,
John Ragle
