I just received a copy of my ggrandfather's application for a Social
Security card. Melvin ROBBINS was born 28 February 1884 in Culver,
Marshall Co, IN to Charles and Martha COLLINS ROBBINS. Melvin married
Lillie BURDEN (who I have no information on whatsoever) and they had at
least the following seven children:
Alice, Alta, Hazel, Ruth, Gladys, Hilda and Eugene. I believe that Lillie
died while quite young and that Melvin and some of his children moved to
Woodford Co, IL in the mid-1930s. I don't know whether or not Melvin had
any siblings. I also don't know what country this family might have
originally emigrated from (though I'll guess it was somewhere in Great
Britain).
Does anyone have any ideas as to where I should go next to look for
information about these people? I will write off for Melvin's birth
certificate but, based on experience, don't hold real high hopes that I
will learn much more about his parents from that document. I haven't yet
looked into census records for IN but will try that, too. Both Charles
ROBBINS and Martha COLLINS are such common names that going through
genealogical search engines gives me way too many hits to wade through.
Thanking you in advance for any suggestions.
Sincerely,
Amy Robbins-Tjaden
