Trying to determine if Jacob and Elias were brothers. They were both tailors by trade and
both lived in Marshall County during the mid-1800's, as well as Elias' father,
Timothy F. DeVeny, who was also a tailor.
I believe Jacob DeVeny was born in 1828 in either Pennsylvania or Ohio and Elias DeVeny
was born in Tiffin, Ohio, in either 1831 or 1832. There is conflicting information on the
year of Elias' birth, however, my information indicates he was born on August 15,
which is also MY date of birth.....different year!
Jacob married several times: Sylvia ?, Catherine Hamilton, Kattie Burns and maybe Lucinda
Gould. He had four sons and four daughters according to his obituary - some of his
children were - Martha, James, Henry, Elizabeth or Lizzie, Charles B., and Estella. He,
also, had a brother, Elias, according to that obituary.
However, I believe there may have been TWO Elias DeVenys who lived at one time or another
in Marshall County, Indiana, and that's where I'm confused. The 1860 Marshall
County census shows an Elias DeVeny, age 27, a tailor, born in Mississippi with a wife,
Jane and children, Ashton and Frank. The children were born in Iowa. I don't find
this Mississippi-born Elias DeVeny in any later Marshall County, Indiana, census records.
He seems to have moved on.
Then, in the Marshall County census for 1870, 1880, 1900 and 1910 I find an Elias DeVeny,
born in Ohio, who is a tailor living with wife Eunice. This Ohio-born Elias DeVeny is MY
ancestor. He has children: Eddie, Judson, Dora and Chester. I'm trying to determine
if THIS Elias DeVeny is the one who is a brother to Jacob DeVeny.
If anyone is researching any of these DeVenys and knows more about the relationship
between Jacob and Elias, I would like to exchange information. I can be reached at the

Sincerely,
Carolyn (DeVeny) DePaolo
