I don't want to harp, I just happened to run across the issue this morning
while creating a index from this 100 year old book of Indiana.
It says; France owned the Territory, but relinquished it the British in
1763;The British held it till 1779,where the State of Virginia extended its
authority to include the area now known as Ohio/Indiana Valley. Establishing
it as Indiana (on paper) in 1783.
But thats official stuff, we genealogy buffs know that if our family members
were out in the woods having kids, and later a political called our homestead
part of Indiana. Then Official or not, they were born in Indiana ,right.
Well,another little diddy from the book;
Bourbon twp. was called the Small town in the Woods.
None ever went there except for gatherings. Known as the Bloody Ninth
Congressional District.Riots and gang fights between Plymouth and Bourbon
often broke out.
The book described a ritual in the towns, that I compare to the movie "Quiet
Man".
In the towns were men of muscularity who claimed the towns' territory. These
men met on weeks end and would pick fights with the new folks to declare
their dominance.
This book on the Marshall County History is soooo cool.
I am creating a Index to offer lookups, but it'll be awhile. It has alot of
people mentioned!
