I walked past that food vendor in the Coliseum where the gas leak went
undetected, many times, as I used to deliver the Indianapolis News to the
fairgrounds at age 13. I never could understand why no one smelled the gas
leaking for so long. It could have been prevented! How about Barbara
Hutchinson's near death experience! About 30 years later, while I was
working for the Indianapolis Public Schools, the very police officer that
threw me out of the coliseum that night, was working at I.P.S.
I brought up meeting him and what I saw and how he treated me, and he said I
was a liar! He hadn't changed a bit. Heard he was a beat cop for along
time too! You get that job when you are on probation for something. It's
not that I can't lay it to rest as I have never brought it up before now.
The Fair Board had a very hard time renting out the Coliseum for years
after. Bob

My brother worked for Harry W. Moore Funeral Homes. We lived about 8-10
blocks away from the Fairgrounds and my brother went over and helped carry
people out of the Colliseum. We spent many hours ice skating at the
Colliseum
over the years, but that explosion had a huge impact on my brother and what
he
assisted with.
