Hi Bob:
It worked great. Thanks so much for all the help. The only problem I had
at first was finding the latitude and longitude to use on the
maps.google.com and then I happened to look down at the bottom of the page
the map was on and lo and behold the URL of the map had the latitude and
longitude right on it <g>.

Subject: [INMARION] LAND PATENTS-clear as mud!
What I was trying to do several weeks ago was show you how to use google
earth to locate aerials. Now with Land Patents and Topozone, you can take
coordinates and turn them into aerials of your ancestors land and changing
to STREET VIEWS on Google, you, in some cases can virtually drive down the
streets. And it does not cost you anything.
It may not work for everyone. If your ancestor bought land much later, or
lost it, it may not show anything. Maybe they spelled the name
differently??
Using James HOAGLAND as an example, who should be in Perry Twp., go to
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch/ and
click on SEARCH LAND PATENTS. After you have entered a name
JAMES HOAGLAND and found the file, click on LEGAL LAND DESCRIPTION. Jot
down the State: INDIANA County: MARION Sec: 17 Township: 14 Range: 4
Then go to:
http://www.topozone.com/ Click VIEW MAPS
As you are scrolling down the list look at all the states shown. Later you
can go back to this section and find Longitude and Latitude numbers so you
can put them into the search window at
WWW.MAPS.GOOGLE.COM and get an aerial
of the area. Or STREET VIEWS.
At Topozone, it will render a topographical map showing in the middle a red
cross, which is the center line for all your work. Look at the features
around the land. You can see McFarland Road, Sherman Drive, Southport Elem
School and the creek.
Over to the left is a scale. It may show: 1. 50.000
If you want to see more land marks use that drop down box and change scale
to a bigger number. i.e. 1. 100.000.
Nancy, did this help? Bob

Subject: Re: [INMARION] LAND PATENTS EXACT LOCATION - James Hoagland
Importance: High
Hi Bob:
Thanks for giving such great instructions. I've never tried to do this
before. I just tried to do it and got goofed up somewhere.
I just searched on James Hogland. I printed off the patent for August 5,
1834. I went to the Topozone and plugged in the coordinates but I think
I've goofed somewhere. It came up with Clermont and according to the
History of Indianapolis and the Census the land should be in Perry Township,
Southport. When you plug in the coordinates how does it pinpoint the
location on the map? I didn't see anything that would indicate the
location.
Thanks for any help.
