Hi Bob,
Benjaman actually has at least one Facebook page. Just search for his name.
I have Facebooked a lot of Indianapolis high school alumni groups, and have been
inhabiting
Classmates.com in recent months. This new info came in from someone from
Indianapolis who talked to him extensively about Indianapolis - geography, history, social
life, landmarks, architecture...
We came to the conclusion that Benjaman probably lived in the SE area of town. His
memories of the general area and of specific events dates his presence to between 1954 and
1963 at least. He would have been between 6 and 15 years old and he probably did not go
to a Catholic School.
I will write to the list about a specific event he remembers that I have not been able to
pin down. Maybe you guys can help me tighten up the date it happened.
I did speak to Ron Darrah. Very nice person. He told me he worked for the IPS system
until 2 years ago. The CD he has lists info on the schools from about 1898-1899, so it
won't be helpful.
He did tell me however that the IPS Headquarters still has student records from the mid
1950s. They are organized by student name and list birthdate, parents names, addresses,
whether the student transferred...
Unfortunately the IPS office is closed for the holidays until Jan 3. In the meantime, I am
going to continue to Facebook and Classmate groups from those public schools, and see if I
can get pictures of them for Benjaman. He seems to have a memory for buildings, but he did
not recognize a picture of the front of Calvin Fletcher PS.
But again, this may not mean anything except he did not recognize
The front of Calvin Fletcher PS.

Schools around 1950 Fountain Square.
Abraham Lincoln Public School 18, 1001 E. Palmer St. located just south of
Fountain Square.
Calvin Fletcher Public School 8, 520 Virginia Av. located just north
Horace Mann Public School 13, 714 E. Buchanan just west and
Otis E. Brown School 20, 149 E. Pleasant Run Pkwy. S. Dr. is just east.
I have an idea for you. Get on Face book and post your notice along with a
link to the Wikipedia site so people can see the photo of the man with
amnesia to HISTORIC INDIANAPOLIS wall. There are historians on that link
who may know someone who may have grown up there in the 50's.

Hi,
Do you have the name of School #18? Are there/were there any other
schools within walking distance of Fountain Square in the mid 1950s?
Colleen
That grade school was the Calvin Fletcher School just north of Fountain
Square on Virginia Av. & East St. and it may be the school you are looking
for. If the family lived just south of Fountain Square it may be School
18
which was just west of Shelby St. on Palmer St. If you need a student
roster, you should contact the I.P.S. historian Ron Darrah for info.
Darrah(a)comcast.net I believe he has put the enrollment of schools on a
CD.

Hi,
Can anyone give me a list of public schools that were located in south
east Indianapolis in the 1950s. I am especially interested in the schools
near Fountain Square at the intersection of Virginia Ave and Shelby St.
Thanks,
Colleen
