Dave, Can I ask what you found out? I have to order a death record, and was
wondering if there were limitations there too.
Thanks,
Tanya

Hi Dave,
I think you will get the answer when you phone the office on Mon or Tues.
This seems like a problem that has come up before.

Colleen,
No, but that is probably going to be my next thing to try (phoning Marion
County) on Monday or Tuesday, but I was hoping there was some way of doing
it otherwise. . . .especially without hiring an attorney. I fully
understand the need to prevent identity theft in this day and age, but what
is the point in this case when everyone named on it has been deceased for
at
least 21 years? FWIW, I obtained her death certificate from California and
they do the same thing but in a more reasonable way. They have two
different but similar forms of the certificate, one that is valid for
identification purposes and one that is clearly marked "NOT VALID FOR
IDENTIFICATION PURPOSES." The latter one is fine for genealogy and most
other purposes other than to obtain ID, and I only had to state that I was
her son, but if this law in Indiana is correct then it sure seems
unreasonable for someone who has been deceased for 21 years.
I will try to telephone them this coming week and see what I can find out,
but if anyone reading this has any suggestions for getting a copy I would
be
most grateful. I need it to document the information on a society
application, and it DOES NOT even have to be a certified copy, just a copy
of the actual document and not a transcription or index copy.
If anyone has any solution to this dilemma hopefully NOT involving a
lawyer,
I would sure welcome hearing from you.

Hi David,
It seems that this would be a common problem, obtaining a birth certificate
when all the relevant parties are dead. Have you just plain called the
vital
records office and talked to a supervisor?
You may have to consult an attorney.
