Howard, went back this morning and raised from 4 inches under the soil Uncle
Lon White, and still thought another stone should be between them so got my
probe and found and raised a 5th stone...
JOANNA GATEWOOD 1870-1895 It was down about 5 inches under soil... Now I
am thinking if I take this 1,050 burial cemetery one plot at a time, I may
discover more in my lifetime...Maybe I should retire early and get started
instead of using my days off from I.P.S.
You and Bob Hessong have something in common.. He lives next door to the
Stoops cemetery on Fall Creek Road... The Lawrence Township Trustee just
got a crew to start cutting his abandon cemeteries...last week.
Walking in a cemetery conjures up thoughts of the grieving parents when a
little one was laid to rest, or the Veteran in a flag draped coffin being
rolled down a side path in a caisson. Or finding an arrowhead, from the
past inhabitants, or the prairie flowers that still bloom as they did
hundreds of years ago..Families, entire neighborhoods, that stood the test
for time over 3 and 4 generations in the same place..It's an outdoor history
museum.
Bob Hessong's uncle was the principal of John Strange School. His grand pap
was Howard Johnson, who wrote a book, Home in the Woods. It was about his
grand pap, Oliver Johnson. They owned all the land around the fairgrounds.
Bob's family, are buried in the Crow's Nest cemetery behind the Eli Lilly
estate. I will call him and get with you. Bob

Bob,
Congratulations on finding those four stones. Were it not for you,
they might have been lost forever. And they're in very good condition!
I live adjacent to Crown Point Cemetery in Pike Township and often
walk the grounds. I can't help but wonder how many stones and markers
have been lost to the ages.
I also noted that Bob Hessong is a 4g-grandson of Powell Howland. I've
had reason to research the Howland family and am confused over two
generations (Powell and Elisha), their spouses and children. Now,
because of your note, I may have someone who might be able to help me
find my way out of the family fog.
Could you put me in touch with Bob? I'd be glad to make a phone call
at his convenience. Or if he is active in the MCGS, I'd be glad to
meet him there on one of the Wednesdays or Saturdays.
Many thanks,
Howard
P.S. The name Hessong also rings a bell from years ago. Maybe my Dad
mentioning the name as neighborhood friends -- 46th and Millersville?
Or somehow through John Strange School? Or Broad Ripple High School?
-- some kind of official with either of those schools?
