What makes this special....You don't see people building covered bridges in
Indy any longer and Powell Howland saw a need for one in 1838 as you had to
go to Millersville to cross Fall Creek or down on the Sugar Flats Road to go
across... The Johnson's were involved with it's construction and the timber
was harvested from the Howland woods..My 4t great grandfather Tobias
Messersmith sawed the wood at Millersville.
They painted it white, not only to protect the wood from the weather but
horses were fooled into thinking they were entering a barn, as running water
underneath would make them go wild...
This bridge is inside the fairgrounds where the cars go down in the tunnel
to go to the infield and Howland's was where the little concrete bridge is
across Fall Creek just East of the gate at the fairgrounds..Where the Monon
lets off it's passengers on the State Fair train.
The Interurban Traction Company replaced it with a concrete structure but
didn't last as long as the old wood bridge. Bob
