Rose, I used Google maps to see how far away from Tieringen you live from where my
Messersmith's were. They lived in Ofterdingen and as you travel south on B27 from
Stuttgart, the difference between towns is 52Km.or 45 minutes travel time... How about
that. It is wonderful you can live in the same farm your family was raised in. Stuttgart
and all of Bavaria are special and every store owner greets you with "Chris-t
Gute!" Christ is good. I am going through old records to see if any
Messerschmidt's married Mueller's or Schneider's...Bob

Hi Bob and all,
I guess my english is too bad to explain exactly what I mean. But you brought me to a new
idea.
Lawrence Mueller was a single and was a gardener (census informations). Maybe he was not
an inmate
in the Poorhouse but an employee there. The cemetery there does not more exist. Some years
ago I was helped
a lot by list members to trace my Muellers in Indy.
Three brothers of my grandfather emigrated to Indy: Joseph and Lawrence in 1880, William
in abt 1893. All three lived in Wayne township (N Sheffield and N Tremont). Joseph had two
sons and a daughter. Later they changed their surname to Miller. John who is buried in St.
Joseph cemetery, Albert and Anna. Lawrence was a single. William had a son John who was
married and had children Walter, Esther and Carl ,and two daughters, Anna Ellerman and
Emma Schifferdecker, both married and had children. I was fortunate that I could get in
contacts with descendants of Emma. These three children of William were all born in
Germany, in the farm house where I am living now. My grandfather never emigrated. He was
the youngest son and was the hair of the little farm.
BTW, Bob. The "Mark" is now a historical currency. Most of the European states
have now the currency "Euro". One Euro is abt 1,65 $.
Thank you all
Rose

Hi Terre and Bob,
I am living in Germany, maybe not so far from Tieringen, if your Tieringen
is in the county of Balingen (next to Ratshausen and Schoemberg).
A brother of my grandfather - Lorenz Mueller, has died july 2, 1912 at the
age of 61 years in the Marion County Poor House in Wayne Township, Indy and was
buried the next day. I do not know where. Is the Marion County Poor House in
Tibbs Av the same as Central State Hospital for the insane? Maybe he was
depressive? he had lived there for abt 12 years (death certificate). A younger
brother of him was found dead in the Canal and the family never knew if it was
an accident, a suicide or a murder.
Sincerely
Rose

Wow!, I grew up on 57th and Broadway and know exactly the hill that you are
talking about! I, and I don't think anyone else in the neighborhood knew
that there was once a cemetery there. I'd love to find out more about it.

Has anyone on this list ever had the chance to turn back the clock or have
the opportunity to visit an area where your kin were living?
E-mail from Ron Mustard. He moved from Michigan to Indianapolis and never
knew any Mustards were here, around Broad Ripple! He has been researching
ever since. An old Mustard cemetery was located at 57th & Broadway on the
hill where 3 houses are now.

The Old Mustard House at 4644 Central Av. is up for sale. We were able to
contact the Realtor and take a tour the other evening. So sorry to see it
in such disrepair but, was interesting to walk the same floors etc. that my
Great Great Uncles did. I am still trying to pin down exactly when they
were residents of that home. It was built in 1832 and the two Mustard's
that are mentioned as living there (William and Joseph) wer
e born in 1830
and 1831, respectively. The Realtor was going to try and see if she could
find any more info thru Title Searches for ownership. Ron

Gutten Tag Rose! The Poor House was just up the street on Tibbs, on the
West side, by 21st St. They had a cemetery on the property and I can't
remember what happened to it.. Or if the library has readings. There is a
Charles Mueller From Marion County died Sep. 22, 1910 at the Central State
Hospital cemetery and in the Mt. Jackson cemetery on Tibbs are 5 Muellers,
Adolph, Clement [who was moved to Crown Hill] George, Gladys and possibly a
infant. What is your grandfather's name? If you find him you might find
his brother Lorenz.
Speaking about poorhouses, we visited some orphanages in Darmstadt area and
most of the children in them were left because the parents were too poor to
raise them. It was so sad.
Germany is beautiful, and from anywhere, you can make weekend trips to other
countries. When I was there, a Deutsch Mark equaled=2
025 cents, one quarter.
What is a Mark now? I here everyone is using Euro's...Bob

Here is what we do.. We round up everyone on this list and show up
pretending to want to aerate their yard with soil probes, and see if we can
find some buried tombstones. Think the home owner
s would mind? A lady who
lives nearby found where the cemetery was deeded by a Mustard for use as a
cemetery and an old map from 1900 shows it. It went from Broadway west to
the alley. Many old pioneer graveyards have been bulldozed in the name of
progress. Will post what we find out about it to this list. Bob

Guten Tag, Rose,
Isch sprechen ein bissen, bissen Deutsche! Thank you for responding to my
earlier story about my Schneider family!
I just checked my map of Germany, and you are indeed living near Tieringen,
the former home of my Great Great Grandparents, and Great
Grandfather
Schneider, who immigrated to Wells Co., IN in 1869. I have done a little
family research, and learned a little about the history of the area in
general, but haven't visit yet. I just retired from the federal government
this past January, and am still adjusting to retired life, which has been
great so far! I plan to take a German class soon to learn to speak, read
and write German before I travel to Germany, so I will be able to
communicate more effectively and understand life in general betterwhile I'm
in country.
I learned from the Tieringen church records that my German Schneider
ancestors were weavers and farmers. In English, the surname Schneider means
tailor, which is very appropriate, because our early German Schneiders were
weavers (and farmers)! As an aside, my mom sewed our clothing and many
other articles for our home when we were growing up, and thoroughly enjoyed
it. And later, after we kids were grown up and had left home, she enrolled
in a weaving class, when she was finishing up her degree in Home Economics,
and also enjoyed it as well! Imagine her surprise when I told her that her
Schneider ancestors had been weavers! As for our early German Schneiders
being farmers, when our Great, Great Grandparents immigrated to Wells Co.,
IN, guess what work they did? Yes, they were farmers, a tradition that was
carried down to my Grandfather, who helped his father with his farm before
he met my Grandmother, and moved to Oklahoma, where he was a farmer many
year
s before he obtained work in the petroleum industry. My dream is to
visit Tieringen, and to learn about the type of weaving our ancestors did,
and to take pictures of it and some of the German farms in the area to show
my mom, and to include in a family history book that I hope to write
someday. (I have looked on the Internet to see if I can locate pictures of
weaving from the area, but have been unable to locate any.
I have so many questions I want to ask you about my Schneider ancestors,
Tieringen, etc., and am curious as to whether you would be open to further
discussions about them?
Will close for now, as I have a few errands to run before the rain starts,
as I just heard some thunder off in the distance. I hope you are having a
great day, and will look forward to chatting again soon.
Thank you,
Terre

Hi Bob and Rose,
I just read your response to Rose after I finished writing her earlier
today, and your discovery of other Muellers in the area has prompted me to
add a couple of comments!
First of all, is there any possibility that Lorenz could have been a middle
name for the Muellers you located? As you know, a lot of people drop their
first names an
d go by their middle names, as did my mother and sister. The
other question I have is whether Lorenz's name might have inadvertently
mispelled, or changed after he came to the USA? For example, my Great
Grandfather Albert Schneider showed up on several early censuses as Albert
Snyder, rather than the original German spelling of Schneider. Another
thing I've heard from a friend down here in GA is that the Mueller name was
changed to Miller, plus Lorenz might be listed as Lawrence, or even Larry.
So Lorenz Mueller might appear as Lawrence Miller or Larry Miller.
Just thoughts ...
Hope you are having a great day!
Terre

Went by the Mustard house that is for sale at 4644 N Central Av. in Indy.
Picked up a flyer. It originally was built in 1836 by HARDIN, and later
sold to the Mustard's. I have the family records of the Hardin's and they
lived all through this area very early on. Even at 44th & Keystone area.
The place is beautiful but very sad to see it run down on the outside.
Windows are 9 light and falling apart. They had to be loosing a lot of heat
in the cold weather. Plastic on some windows. It is listed for sale
"as-is" for $249,900. If you e-mail me off list I will send a scan of the
flyer on the house and what it looks like inside.. This may be the oldest
house still standing in Indy!
About 15 years ago the Winpenny House in Millersville was scheduled for
demolition and it was such a historic house a Boy Scout approached the
developer and struck a deal, that if he could find someone to have the house
moved, would the developer sell it for one dollar. He accepted, and after
the story appeared in the newspaper, a sale was made. The new owner had the
house moved to a lot across from the Masonic Lodge on Emerson Av. and in the
next couple of years, restored it to mint condition. When you meet this
man, he tells of the most expensive dollar=2
0house he ever bought!
Restoration and moving was $200,000. Bob
