Thank you so much, Bob. I appreciate the name; I'm definitely going to contact him.
(I tried to pull up the courthouse picture, but it said "Error-page not found",
so maybe I'll try again tomorrow)
Thanks again!
Gale

Gale for a picture of the courthouse that was torn down in
the 1960's go
here:
http://www.in.gov/library/2361.htm and
scroll down to COUNTIES L-M,
then click on MARION COUNTY, and scroll down to the
courthouse Samuel Duke
saw across the street. I am going to check Schrader's
Indianapolis as he
sketched many businesses in the mile square ca. from 1820 -
1850.
For a bounty of information why not contact a man that
knows where all the
records are. Here is his information. Darrol G.
Pierson e-mail is:
Darrol_pierson9051(a)sbcglobal.net
He is a professional MSL
Librarian/Independent Researcher/ Genealogist. If he
doesn't contact you
then e-mail back. His rates are very reasonable. Plus
you get results.
This is just an option. Bob

Thank you so much, Bob. It's great to see how kind
and helpful people are.
Too bad the whole world is not like genealogists! I'm
looking forward to my
search in Indy.
Gale
P.S. My cousin found this in the Indianapolis
Democrat (1831) when she was
in Indy:
Cabinet Making
The subscriber wishes to inform the public and his friends
that he has
lately erected a new shop on Washington street, opposite
the Court House,
where he is now ready to execute all orders for articles in
his line at the
shortest notice, and on the most favourable terms.
From long experience in
the practice of his trade in New-York, Philadelphia,
Pittsburg and
Cincinnati he thinks himself able to do work in the most
fashionable and
approved style, and for Cash he will work lower than has
usually been done
in Indianapolis. He will also do work for cherry and
poplar plank and
scantling on the same terms, and merchantable produce will
be considered as
the best of pay. He tenders his thanks for the very
liberal encouragement
hitherto given by his friends, and hopes to merit and
receive a continuance
of their favours.
SAMUEL DUKE
November 19th, 1831
15 tf.
Bob, does Washington Street still exist? Is the
courthouse from this era
still there? Of course we are very excited to find
where Samuel lived
before he lived in Indianapolis and do research there, but
does this article
give you any ideas of where else in Indy to look for
information on Samuel
Duke? (It didn't look like there was a city directory
this early). I'm
just not sure where to go in Indianapolis from here.
Any ideas? (We have
census records (Center Township), and marriage records for
some children,
hearsay about First Presbyterian Church records of baptisms
of 3 children,
(do you know where the old records of the church would be
found?) a short
biographical sketch in "Early Reminiscences of
Indianapolis", and that's
about it.
Thank you so much,
Gale
