My great grandfather was also a tinner, he repaired metal roofs on
buildings. The tinner's paint color of choice was red and my father was
familiar with that, and he always called it Tinner's Red. The home my
parents bought in 1947 had a tin roof which eventually they replaced with
asphalt as it was more reliable than a tin roof. My great grandfather when
he was not a tinner, owned a hardware store in the Bloomfield section of
Pittsburgh. The store is now a tatto parlor.

Bob, thanks so much for posting this link.
In the 1857 edition of the Indianapolis City Directory found there,
it was stated that my 3rd great-grandfather, "Wm. Holmes who came in
the spring of 1822, was the first tinner."
Does anyone know what this means?
Thanks,
Dee in FL
