My name is John Prather. I am a genealogist with the LDS church working on
a rather momentous project called the Norway Project. The Family History
Library in Salt Lake has purchased the bygdeboks for all of Norway and we,
along with others through out the world, are in the process of extracting
the names of families in the books and combining these names with census
records. When we finish, this work will be available to the world free of
charge.
We are looking for a few good men and women to assist in this great work. I
am contacting friends and sons and daughters of Norway because of the
obvious interest you have to identify your family and become aware of all
your progenitors. Please note the power point presentation attached to
this letter.
In a nut shell here is what we ask our friends to do. We send out between
10-12 digitized pages from the Bygdaboks to your residence, and at your
leisure you extract the names from an easily recognizable format to a
program called the PAF (personal ancestral file). This program is free and
easy to use. You then email the results to our offices and you are done
with the assignment. You may do as many assignments as you wish. It is
not absolutely necessary to read or speak Norwegian but for those who do we
have special assignments. With your help, in a couple of years this effort
will make it possible for anyone of Norwegian descent to identify most, if
not all, of their progenitors as far back as the early sixteen hundreds.
Sincerely ,
John Prather
