Hi Jo,
Sorry I've been a bit busy. I found it on the Indiana State Library site.
They have a database called WWII Servicemen Database. I cut and pasted the
info the last time but obviously the text got lost. It reads...
Name: Redmond, James M.
Date 05-01-1945
paper: Star
page column location: p. 2, c.2
remarks: casualty
branch: Army
hometown: Indianapolis
here is the link
http://web.isl.lib.in.us/wwii/wwii_display.asp?IDNum=7151
and here is their blurb about the database....
The World War II Servicemen is an online database, based on a cardfile index
created by Indiana Division librarians during World War II. From 1942
through early 1946, the librarians indexed the three major Indianapolis
daily newspapers (News, Star, and Times) for notices of casualties, missing
military personnel, prisoners, and decorations of Indiana servicemen and
women. There are also notices of civilians taken prisoner overseas during
the war. You may search by name (first and/or last, in any order) as well as
by town or city.
While the librarians indexed only the Indianapolis newspapers, they included
notices for people throughout the state. Fields in the database include
name, date and location of the article, what happened to the person, his or
her branch of military service, and hometown. Not all of this information
was included on every card. Many cards list multiple names in these cases
there may only be a short mention of the person indexed.
You can contact the Newspaper Section of the Indiana Division or use the
Ask-A-Librarian service to request copies of articles for which there is a
complete citation (included the name of the person, paper, date, and page
and column number). Please note in your request that you found the
information through the World War II Database.
Hope this helps.
Angela

My thanks to all who wrote in regard to my question! I guess I can assume
my uncle was assigned to another Army base or he could have retired to
somewhere other than the Indy area.
Angela: I have looked and looked but cannot find the Redmond "with a
different middle initial" which you mentioned.
For those who might be interested I found the following in my notes for
James J. Redmond
11th Infantry - 5th Division
Indiana Home Station
Fort Benjamin Harrison
S.D. No. 11 E.D. No. 49-20

I know this is a different middle initial but thought I'd send it along in
case he fit into your family.

I know you are in Florida but wanted to let you know that the main location
of the Indianapolis Public Library near downtown has a business section that
has tons of local directories.

They are not in the 1943 nor 1945 directory.
