Hi,
I just received something interesting from Marion County Vital Records
regarding a request for a birth Certificate for my grandfather who was born
in 1885. First they failed to find a record of his birth in that county.
I did get a "Certified" document that states "This is to certify that a
search of our records failed to reveal any record of birth of" and goes on to
list my grandfather's name etc. There is actually an embossed seal on this
document. They were kind enough to refund my money also.
They did state "You may want to write to the Allen County Public Library, 900
Webster St., Fort Wayne, IN 46801 as they have done extensive research for
genealogical purposes." I received this information within 3 weeks which
was pretty fast. When I requested my father's birth certificate in 1996 it
took a couple of months. This was quite an improvement.
I got this information from Marion County Health Dept., Vital Records, 3838
N. Rural, Indianapolis, Indiana 46205.
I thought for those looking for those early Birth Certificates you might be
interested. Now my problem is to figure out where my grandfather was
actually born. In the 1880 census the family was in Nelson County Kentucky.
They moved to Indianapolis around 1881 or so family records say. Maybe they
stopped off in another County. This is going to be a tough one I think.
Maybe someone might know if Marion County had the same boarders in 1885 as
they do now.
