Dear listers
Can someone tell me something about Bright St, Indianapolis around 1893?
One of those lucky chances that sometimes occur in genealogy came to me with
a load of information from the excellent research facility at Crown Hill
Cemetery, Indianapolis.
Whilst looking for (and finding) the grave of my ancestor Phebe SHILLING, I
also found the graves of two of Phebe's younger siblings: William LAKER and
his sister Mary LAKER. I had no idea they had emigrated to the USA.
Amongst the burial details for William was a burial permit, issued to the
almost ubiquitous Mr H W Tutewiler (do they still trade as undertakers?) The
death occurred on January 29 1893 and the deceased' residence was given as
"220 Bright St".
I have looked at a plan of present day Indianapolis and have found a Bright
St a block or so north of Purdue University. Would this be the same Bright
Street? If so, what sort of neighbourhood was it in 1893? Is there any way
of finding who lived at 220 Bright St at that time, (assuming that the 1891
census went up in smoke like the rest).
Some clues:
Several SHILLING families from Phebe's children were resident in
Indianapolis at the time, particularly William E SHILLING and Richard L
SHILLING. They may have been associated with a trunk or luggage
manufacturing business started by Robert SHILLING.
Any help would be most appreciated
