"WELL KNOWN CITIZEN DIES"
William Harris, a well known citizen of this place died from a
complication of typhoid and pneumonia fever Monday afternoon, after only
nine days illness. Mr. Harris was born in Brown Township, Martin County
Indiana, Feb., 28, 1871. On March 4, 1894, he was married to Hettie James
and to this union two children were born, one of whom is still living. He
moved to Odon from Elmore township about four years ago, buying the
William Sims property in East End. He was a member of I.O.O.F. and
Rebekah Lodges in this place which attended to the funeral in a body. He
was 36 years of age. A wife and eleven year old daughter and several
brothers and sisters survive him. The funeral services were held at the
home at 9:30 o'clock Wednesday morning, Elder CH Buchanan in charge.
Burial in Concord cemetery."
CLAY CITY NEWS, AUGUST 23, 1912
Good, Homely, Meat Dishes
"Buy a piece of round from the under half, as it is a bit cheaper and not
so tender. For two pounds of the steak chopped fine, add a teaspoon and
one half of salt, a quarter spoon of pepper, one small onion chopped; mix
well and make into flat cakes. Place on woven wire broiler and cook over
red coals, turning every eight counts until well seared over. Then cook
more slowly until sufficiently cooked for the family taste."
CITY JOTTINGS
"Mrs. Flora Ben ham spent a few days in Terre Haute with her brother
Charles Moody, members of his family being ill."
"In spite of the stormy weather Tuesday evening, the Red Men's box supper
was well patronized. After supper Mr. A. Ferry entertained all in the
hall with his accordion."
OBITUARY
"Catherine Schauber, wife of Lewis Schauber, mother of the late Lizzie
Schauber, died March 2 at her home. Mrs. Schauber suffered for many
years with diabetes and was confined to her home for a number of months.
Nine years ago she became a Charter member of the Pentecostal church of
the Nazarene which she was a faithful member until her death."
"Lena Harris the bright little daughter of Mr and Mrs Levi Harris (MY
GGRANDFATHER'S NIECE), died of an appendicitis at 9:00 o'clock Monday
morning after an illness of three weeks. She was eleven years of age and
was an unusually affectionate and gentle and was loved by all who knew
her. The funeral service was held from the Christian church Tuesday
morning at 10:30 conducted by the Rev Charles W Farnham, after which the
remains were tenderly laid rest in the Newberry cemetery . It was the
most largely attended funeral in Newberry in many years.
Lena Harris, Daughter of Levi and Lou Harris, was born May 31, 1892; died
in Newberry at the home of her parents, February 22, 1904 aged 11 years,
8 months and 23 days.
She confessed her faith in Christ and was Baptized May 3, 1903. During
her last illness she told her parents that she loved Christ more than
anyone else-even Papa and Mama. And she would wipe away the tears of her
Mother's eyes and tell her Father not to cry: and tried to comfort them.
She leaves her parents and a half sister and a half brother and
grandmother besides a large circle of friends, who mourn her untimely
death. But while we sorrow our hearts have this hope, that we shall meet
again, in that better world where God shall wipe away the tears.
The funeral services were conducted from the Christian Church, Feb., 23,
by the Rev. Charles M. Farnham, in the presence of a large number of
sympathizing friends and neighbors."
UNION HILL
"Died, Saturday, February 5, 1881 at the residence of Jacob Harris, son
of the deceased, Mr Henry Harris (MY GGGGRANDFATHER), aged 77 years and
three days. He was born in Mifflin Co, PA., and came to this state when
seventeen years of age. He was married to Julianna Dietz, and they had
eight children. The mother and four children died some years ago. Two of
the children were present at his funeral and two are in the west. The
youngest child of Jacob Harris is lying at the point of death.
That's all for this time, but this man represents my "brick wall". I have
so far been unable to find out who his parents were! Family oral history
says that his father came from Leipzig area of Germany during the
American Revolution. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
