When you asked this question, I remembered I had read somewhere about the street numbers
changing. Finally found it! On the Indianapolis Marion County Library webpage, there is
a guide entitled House History Aid to help people find the history of a house and
neighborhood.
www.imcpl.org/resources/guides/family/househistory/househistoryaid.html
In the guide it says street addresses in Indianapolis were changed in 1887, 1899, and
1916.
My great grandfather who was from Germany, built a house on north Tacoma Avenue and I had
noticed the house number changed from one census to the next but I knew he had only lived
in the one house on Tacoma.
Also there were changes to some street names apparently in the 1910s and 1930s. There is
a chart available on Steve Morse's website which shows the changes in Indianapolis
www.stevemorse.org/census/changes/IndianapolisChanges.htm
Hope this helps.

Is there a resource that shows when street numbers were changed in
parts of the city? Using various city directories I've followed my
ancestors addresses from 1857 to 1900. They remained on the same
street but at times the address changed to a higher number. I
suspect they did not change houses, but that new houses were built
and renumbering of the houses took place. Any chance that is
documented anywhere?
Thanks!
Joel
