Hi,
My great grandfather owned the Geis saloon from 1866 till early 1890's (died
1895) where now the Conesto Field now sits. Have you tried contacting the
Marion County Historical Society in Indianapolis. They have a sizable
facility downtown, but was closed when I was there 2 yrs. ago. They have lots of
info, or may be able to direct you further. Would like to know some of the
same things about the saloon.

Subject: [MARION COUNTY, IN] Question
My Great Great Grandparents owned a Hotel in Indianapolis called The
California House. In the 1860 and 1870 census it was located at 360-366
South
Illinois Street, today The Greyhound Bus Terminal is at that location. My
grandparents were: Adam Kistner born 1826 Germany and married Catherine
Schnabel in
Marion County October 20, 1858, she was born in 1834 in Germany. Adam died
in 1873 and Catherine married two times, Emil Domon and Charles Dantzer,
both
Domon and Dantzer were listed proprietors of The California House. In the
1887-90 Indianapolis directory it lists Dantzer as the proprietor of the
California House. That is a 30 year spand for The California House. I
cannot find
anymore information about this establishment. I cannot find any records
how
it got started, construction, picture or how it ended. Does anyone have
any
knowledge about this or where I might find out more information? Thanking
you
in advance for any help. Sandi

Nancy, thank you for your response. It's frustrating to know that these
establishments existed but only show up in the census records. I will keep
trying and if I find a lead that I think might help you too, I will let you know.
Thanks again for your input. Sandi
