Hi Norma:
John and Catherine had 10 possible children. Rebecca, Mary [my
GGGGgrandmother], and William McClane below [all proven thru marriage
records] were three of them. I do have the names of all the children if you
are interested. Rebecca married John Perkins, Mary married James Hogland
in Henry County, and William married James' sister, Rebecca Hogland. I have
been researching their family history and I know the McClain's and Hogland's
emigrated to Indiana about the same time. According to Sulgrove's history,
the McClain's and Perkins were very instrumental in starting the Mt. Zion
Cemetery and the Mt. Zion ME Church. The Mt. Zion Cemetery is where James
and Mary McClain Hogland are buried. John and Rebecca may have moved on,
this I have no knowledge of, and the only information I have on their burial
was the tombstone readings for Franklin Township.
Rebecca J. was born May 6, 1796, in Mercer County, Kentucky, and married
John Perkins on February 15, 1823, in Henry County, Kentucky.
**********************
Per Don Marsh's records
REBECCA McCLAIN. b. 1793/4 Mercer County, Kentucky. m. JOHN PERKINS 15
February 1823 Henry County, Kentucky. Marriage license contains consent for
"my daughter REBECCA McCLAIN and JOHN PERKINS", signed
by CATHERINE, witnessed by JAMES HOGLAND [Mary's husband] and GEORGE
McCLAIN. Additionally, in early Marion County, Indiana, Mt. Zion Church was
a joint venture of the McCLAIN and PERKINS families and other members of
this
McCLAIN family moved to Marion County. Died 13 September, 1846, Franklin
Twp., Marion County, Indiana.
***********************
My Mary was born October 11, 1782, in Mercer County, Kentucky, and married
James Hogland on August 22, 1809, in Henry County, Kentucky. She died on
August 14, 1863, and is buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, in Franklin Twp.
William and Rebecca Hogland McClane's daughter, Rebecca, married James and
Mary McClain Hogland's son, John on October 11, 1844, in Marion County.
There was a lot of intermarrying between the Hogland and McClain families.
Don Marsh spent years researching the McClain family and had the web page
called the McClain Exchange where he was researching all lines of the
McClain's. He had the most extensive collection I have seen.
If you would like to exchange information, please let me know.

I know of at least two Rebecca McClains and perhaps more but I think they
may have been confused. The John Perkins in Indiana doesn't seem to match
ours who we do have Bible Records on.
Rebecca Perkins gravestone is in the Rumble Cemetery in Washington County
back in a field. For some years the family thought it was an unmarked
grave, but the broken stone was repaired and is back in place. I have a
photo of the actual gravestone with the 13 September 1865 death date on it
so I am sure of the date. It was also listed in the WPA records where I got
the birth date. The dates you have may be correct but for a different
Rebecca. I did find John Perkins and Rebecca McClains marriage record in
Kentucky with her mother's name listed as Catherine McClain, widow. I am
fuzzy on the Indiana history but we have pretty thoroughly researched
Kentucky and Iowa. My grandmother had some info and a couple distant cousins
had a bit more. Our only verification of her father was John McClain's
estate settlement in 1804, which lists his wife as Catherine and children
James and Rebecca. However, other McClains had Rebeccas as well.... The
Rebecca McClain Perkins that I have was married in 1823 so I believe your
Rebecca is a younger Rebecca. Is she the daughter of William McClain and
Rebecca Hoagland.
This is the only Hoagland info I have so you may be able to supplement it or
clarify it.
The following record was found USGENWEB Archives.

Hi Norma:
Rebecca McClain Perkins is the sister of my GGGGrandmother, Mary McClain
Hogland. Rebecca died on September 13, 1846, Franklin Township, Marion
County, Indiana. The Hogland's, McClains, and Perkins were in Franklin and
Perry Townships by 1823 and were very instrumental in settling the area.
Most of the McClains and Hoglands are buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery and Acton
Cemetery in Franklin Township.
I found both Rebecca and John in the cemetery readings for Acton Cemetery.
I think there may have been a mistake as to how the data was entered in the
software. It shows John W. Perkins DOB as Dec 4, 1853. which is probably
his date of death. Rebecca is shown as Rebecca J. Perkins DOB Sept 13, 1841
and I show her date of death as September 13, 1846.
They are also listed on
familysearch.org.
I hope this is of some help to you.

Seeking information on the McCorkle or Perkins Family in the
Marion/Hendricks Co., Indiana area.
Walter McCorkle b. 04 Apr 1821 d. 16 Nov 1852 m. 25 Apr. 1843 to Catherine
Perkins in Hendricks Co., Indiana. However their two oldest children were
born in Marion Co., Indiana. Catherine was born 03 Jan 1825 in New Castle,
Henry Co., Kentucky She died 14 Oct 1875 in Washington Co., Iowa. Both are
buried in the Rumble Cemetery, Washington County, Iowa.
Their children were Joseph Hillis b.19 March 1845, Nancy Jane b.1 Aug. 1848
d. 17 March 1852 in Washington County, Iowa, Rebecca Ann b. 21 Apr 1852
Daviess Co., Indiana d.2 Jul 1933 in Washington County, Iowa
Catherine Perkins was the daughter of John Perkins and Rebecca McClain b.06
May 1796 Mercer Co., Ky
d. 13 Sep 1865. Rebecca McClain Perkins is buried beside her daughter
Catherine and her first husband Walter McCorkle. I have been to the
gravesite and photographed her gravestone. However, some GedComs report that
John Perkins and Rebecca McClain are buried in the Acton Cemetery in Marion
Co., Indiana. We have not found John Perkins gravestone but they were in
Washington County at the time of their deaths. They had moved to Iowa by
1852. Walter and Catherine McCorkle are in the 1852 State census. John
Perkins remarried to Mary Meeker in 1866, a few months after his first
wife's death.
Is there someone in the Marion Co. area that can verify if there is an
actual gravestone for Rebecca McClain Perkins in Acton Cemetery? I suspect
it is just an assumption by someone that they are buried there if other
family members lived there.
The parents of Walter McCorkle are unknown but he named his only son was
named Joseph Hillis McCorkle which implies that they may have been related
to the Hillis family. Any further information on the McCorkles are
appreciated. They are not in the book that Lewis McCorkle firat published
"Viking Glory". He did include my information in his second book so I have
that information.
I believe that he is descended from John McCorkle and Elizabeth Hillis but
cannot determine where he fits in.
Sincerely,
Norma Jennings
