I would like to thank everyone who has given me so much great help
since my first posting on this site. There are two questions that have
puzzled
me since starting root diggin'
1. Why did Karl (Charles in America) HAUG go to Indianapolis, IN? As far as
I know at this time, there were no other members of his family that
preceeded him
there. There well might have been family friends who went there and thru
letters
suggested that he come. His father, Johann HAUG, with two wives in
Hirschau,
Württemberg, Germany, had 19 children. He was the first. There may have
been cousins
that left Germany and went to Indianapolis. I have found that there were
many Germans
there in the 1850 - 1870s. There is no one left alive in my family who
can help on this question
2. How did Karl and he to be wife, Anna Margaretha Bauer, who also came to
Indianapolis, IN, get from NYC to Indianapolis. From some history of
the transportation
available at this time, I theorize that they may have gone by barge in
the Erie Canal to
the Great Lakes and then to the Chicago area and thru rivers and canals
to Indianapolis??
But, this is just a guess.
I am hoping that there is someone with German ancestors who came from NYC to
Indianapolis in the 1860s and who knows how and why they came????
Am holding thumbs. Thanks very much.
Arthur J. Haug
Grandson of Karl Haug and Anna Bauer
