Karla,
In 2000 I was able to get a copy of my ancestor's death notice from
the German language Indiana Tribune, this was from 1886. The cover
letter explained that....
"The Indianapolis newspapers of the 1800s printed very few
obituaries, for porminent or newsworthy people or in the case of a
violent or unusual death. Death notices sometimes were printed as
paid insertions at the beginning of the classified section, but there
were not inclusive, only one or two, if any at all, appearing each day."

Dear Listers,
Perhaps, you can answer this question for me. I am looking for
a repository of German language newspapers such as the Indianapolis
Public Library. Has anyone on this list ever searched one for an
obituary? We are looking for the death of Johann Georg ILG and his
wife, Louisa. They probably died before 1900. Thank you for any help.
Karla
