STOLE CORPSES FOR MEDICAL COLLEGE
Seven negroes of Indianapolis, Ind., confessed that they robbed nearly one
hundred graves in the different cemeteries in that city. They sold them to
the College of Physicians and Surgeons where they were used in the anatomical
room. The negroes were equipped with horses and wagons and always went armed
with shot guns. It usually took them about twenty-five minutes to rob a
grave, and they invariably left it looking like they found it. One said that
in Mount Jackson cemetery they "pretty near cleaned the place out," adding:
"I don't believe we missed anybody that has been buried there since July." A
few of the graves were not disturbed because the flowers and other articles
on top were arranged in such a manner that the ghouls were not confident of
their ability to restore the graves to their former appearance. The negroes
and three attendants at the college were arrested.
