Requirements for the test are that you be a male Smith of direct Smith
lines, as the test is a Y chromosome, male test. If you are not a male
Smith, but have a relative that is a male Smith (ie, last name is
Smith/Smyth/Smythe/Schmidt),
We DRAKEs did the same thing and lo and behold, my father's 1790 NC line led
back to colonial Isle of Wight, VA...but did not give the names between his VA
and NC lines. Still no paper trail.
Be careful about the "male Smith," too. A Drake cousin couldn't prove his
line from the same man because his gr.grandmother had an illegitimate child and
the child used his mother's name. He had too many "mutants."
It wasn't a shock to him, since he knew the history, but to other Drakes who
could "prove" their line, it was a disaster when the DNA showed they weren't
of the line they thought they were.
Have fun. We did with the Drake DNA test.
