Milly--
I would like a look-up, if you wouldn't mind please. I have four Doyle
brothers from Highland County, VA, who were part of the 31st VA Infantry,
Companies B and G and later combined into the 25th VA Infantry. The story I
have is that all four were captured during the Battle of the Wilderness and
sent to Point Lookout and from there to Elmira Prison in NY. Two of these
brothers made it home. A third died shortly after arrival in Elmira,
apparently from wounds received during the battle. The fourth's whereabouts
were unknown until about a year ago when I believe I may have found his
grave. He also died in Elmira Prison, apparently of starvation shortly
before the war was over. Would like to know what you find on the four men,
if you would do a look up.
1. Eli Doyle, November 14, 1825, 31st VA Inf., died
January 7, 1905, in Valley Center, VA
2. John Floyd Doyle, June 18, 1829, 31st VA Inf., Co.
G. (believed to have died in Elmira Prison, NY,
March 3, 1865 and buried in Woodlawn National
Cemetery, plot CSA 0 2012)
3. William Doyle, June 18, 1827, 31st VA Inf., Co. B,
died March 15, 1888, in Clover Creek, Pocahontas
County, VA
4. George W. Doyle, November 14, 1830, died May
17, 1904 (no info on whether or not he served in the
military, but am presuming that he did since the other
boys of the family did; however, he may have been the
one son who remained behind to tend property and
care for the women)
5. Jacob Doyle, April 8, 1834, 31st VA Inf., Co. B,
died September 18, 1864, in Elmira Prison (buried in
Woodlawn National Cemetery, plot CSA 0 512)
