Thank you so much, Bob. It's great to see how kind and helpful people are. Too bad the whole world is not like genealogists! I'm looking forward to my search in Indy.

P.S. My cousin found this in the Indianapolis Democrat (1831) when she was in Indy:
Cabinet Making
The subscriber wishes to inform the public and his friends that he has lately erected a new shop on Washington street, opposite the Court House, where he is now ready to execute all orders for articles in his line at the shortest notice, and on the most favourable terms. From long experience in the practice of his trade in New-York, Philadelphia, Pittsburg and Cincinnati he thinks himself able to do work in the most fashionable and approved style, and for Cash he will work lower than has usually been done in Indianapolis. He will also do work for cherry and poplar plank and scantling on the same terms, and merchantable produce will be considered as the best of pay. He tenders his thanks for the very liberal encouragement hitherto given by his friends, and hopes to merit and receive a continuance of their favours.
SAMUEL DUKE
November 19th, 1831 15 tf.
Bob, does Washington Street still exist? Is the courthouse from this era still there? Of course we are very excited to find where Samuel lived before he lived in Indianapolis and do research there, but does this article give you any ideas of where else in Indy to look for information on Samuel Duke? (It didn't look like there was a city directory this early). I'm just not sure where to go in Indianapolis from here. Any ideas? (We have census records (Center Township), and marriage records for some children, hearsay about First Presbyterian Church records of baptisms of 3 children, (do you know where the old records of the church would be found?) a short biographical sketch in "Early Reminiscences of Indianapolis", and that's about it.
Thank you so much,
Gale

Ed,
No, I didn't know, and am absolutely thrilled to find out! I will write the Indiana Historical Society today. Thanks to you, I'm also writing today for the newspaper articles. Thank you, thank you, Ed, for your kindness and help.

Hi Gale:
My gg grandfather, Henry Robinson was in the same company & regiment as your
Duke, C.!
I have copies of Henry's letters home. In them, he references a "Duke" as
well as "Sam Parkhill."
I don't know what the"J" is--maybe a volume designation--but there's the
date, and the "p 2 c 3" would be "page 3, column 3."
There is an excellent history of the 100th Regiment; "Marches & Battles of
the 100th Indiana Infantry."
In the section on Co. K (page 411) is:
Duke, Columbus, Killed, Missionary Ridge, Nov. 25, '63.
Does that help?
I would LOVE to find a death notice for Henry (d. 11 August 1864, Marietta
GA), and to discover where he is buried...I've searched since 1982!

Not that I am aware of. I cannot see that in their list of fees.
Back in the year 2000, I ordered twenty pages and the charge
was $.25 per page plus $5.00 postage = $10.00 and I live in
England.

Memphis, Tennessee and there is also a certificate issued by the
Adjutant General's Office of Indiana certifying Duke's Civil War

If you're from a state other than Indiana doesn't it cost $10 per page?

when I was in Salt Lake City. Does anyone know where I would write to get a
copy of the actual article? Do I need to hire a researcher? They only use
the initial of the newspapers. One is "J", the other "N". Does anyone know

After a decades-long journey that included a blood-soaked side trip through
the criminal underworld,
a 140-year-old stamp was auctioned off Saturday for $375,000.
The estate of J. David Baker, Indianapolis, put the 1869 stamp and its
envelope, known as the
Ice House Cover, on the market after establishing it had the ownership
rights to the stamp last year.
Terry Prall gave an interesting and informative talk today.

Nice link to the fascinating history of Holliday Park on Spring Mill Road.
When you open the page, scroll down to the history of Holliday Park link in
PDF. It is 28 pages.
My great grandfather, James Monroe Risley owned land next to the Johnson's
on the east side.
It was all farms then.
