Danni,
I married a Norwegian in 2005 in Gran, Norway at one of the 12 century
sister churches. Norway is beautiful and has a small population. My husband
is very versed in Norwegain history if you have any questions.Where exactly
did you go ?
Bob, you are right , I really felt as though I had gone back in time
visiting this foreign country.I would like to go visit just so I can
actually relax again.

I SECOND THAT NOMINATION!!! You would not believe all the great things Bob does! I belong to several lists, and Bob Alloway is always there (and usually the first) to lend a helping hand! Not only does he help with genealogy, he helped me this last week on finding our lost African Grey parrot, Feshi. I'm in the process of writing Bob a thank you, but when I saw this email, I thought people ought to know just what a knowledgeable wonderful guy Bob is! THANK YOU, BOB!!!!

Marian, do you know if any of your Smith's married Mustard's? Did some of
your Smith's live in Broad Ripple? There has to be a connection, they were
all so close by..Bob

The Smiths who ran the dairy were John H. Smith and Son--my great

Hezekiah Smith.) If I can be of any help, let me know. Marian
Danni, when you went to Norway, did you find the church your family belonged

Your mother and her father must have had a falling out along the way. That
is very sad, but what a beautiful story...Your mom may have had some regrets
about her daddy but the Masonic emblem showed they had something in
common...Bob

My story is a little different, but I think I was able to help to heal a
"heart hurt."
My mother told me that she last saw her father in 1953/1954, when I was
about 6 months old. She never said more than that, so I assume that she
never saw or heard from him again. Then in 1966 she received a phone call
that he had passed away and had been buried the week before in California. I
had never known my grandfather.
Then about 1998 when I was searching for information about him, I discovered
that he had lived in Sacremento. Through the help of someone on the Northern
California Roots list, I was able to get a copy of his death certificate.
>From that information I contacted the funeral home and found out where he
was buried and his last home address. Not long after that my husband and I
were able to take a trip to Sacremento, and we went to the cemetery found
his gravestone and also drove by the house where he had lived. Of course we
took some pictures!
I hadn't told my mom before we left what were were planning to do, but when
we got home I told her my story and showed her the pictures of the cemetery,
gravestone, and his death certificate. For a long time she looked at the
gravestone, not saying a word. I thought I had put my foot in it--again
(which I always seemed to do with her). When she did finally say something,
it was, "I can't believe you found all this." A few days later I received a
short note from Mom expressing how much she appreciated finally knowing
where her father was buried. But what I hadn't realized was the gravestone.
Mom was a member of Eastern Star from her middle 20's; it had meant a lot to
her. But someone had arranged for a 32nd Degree emblem to be on my
grandfather's stone, and it was this that seemed to mean the most to my
mother.
Mom passed away four years later, but she did tell me a couple more times
that she was glad I found out about her dad.

Rob, many of us are interested in the Mustards. Mainly because of other
connections.. Thanks for the photo. I think Elizabeth Hague gave me a copy
of those land records but I have to check..Your John W. Smith may be related
to Hezekiah Smith line. During the 1930's in B.R., the Smith girls daddy
died and these girls encouraged the mother to remarry. She married Mr.
Hudson the B.R. station master. I have pictures.. Not sure if it is the
same connection though.
I am related to Smith's also but not this branch.. Mine settled around
Millersville and Malott Park area. Other Smith's in the Glendale area,
operated a dairy. I have never seen a chart with all the Mustard's on it as
they didn't leave much of a paper trail.
Have you made an ancestry chart? Would like to see it to make some
connections. Smith's are hard to track, like Mustard's. Many of my
Smith's/Messersmith's are buried at Union Chapel on Haverstick Road and
Ebenezer-Fall Creek cemetery on Millersville Road.
Some of my Messersmith-Smith-Seerley lines moved out to Story County Iowa
too!
I hope you don't mind me sharing your e-mail with the list as many other
connections are on this list. Bob

Subject: Old Mustard House
Bob,
Was it Ron that was interested in the Mustard's who had land near Nora,
Indiana or was it you? My g-g grandfather, John W. Smith either purchased
some land from a Mustard or sold some to a Mustard. I will have to look it
up if anyone is interested in the exact location and sale. I have the
documents. As I recall, the land was very close to the White River where
the Whitinger's settled north of Broad Ripple by about ten miles (give or
take). Best regards Rob Smith
PS: At one time during my Smith research, the Mustard's were somehow related
to the John Smith or Jacob Whitinger clans but could never find the exact
connection. I believe a Peter Smith married a Mustard but could not bring
Peter into our line of Smith's, especially a John W Smith (there were
hundreds). Our John and Rachel Smith moved to Iowa in the early 1850's,
settled and died in Story County, Iowa.
Since you have begun your journey into your family research, you have done
well. You wonder what may have driven EMILY SCHNEIDER into an asylum. It
was a tough life, and my Messersmith's worked their women and their children
hard. They worked them harder than the hired hands!
There was a contest at the Indiana State Fair to see who could harvest the
most wheat, not sure of the years, but the story was handed down through the
family. The women in the family entered into the contest as they preferred
field work to house work! They won! This should have been front-page news!
I will check, but the graveyard at Central State Hospital is not marked with
tombstones. In operation on the property is the Medical Museum and they may
have records of your great grandmother. I have the Central State cemetery
book but it is buried in my stuff, and I will look for it. Here is a link:

Hi Bob,
I don't usually respond to this list because most of my family research has
been done in Wells County and Adams County, but your question as to whether
any of us have had the chance to turn back the clock and visit where our kin
have lived in the past put me in a storytelling mood about my Mom's Dad,
George Schneider's family. The story I am about to tell is the size of a
small book, but I love telling it, because so many great people helped me
arrive at the point with my family history that I felt comfortable turning
back that clock to visit the old Schneider farm in Wells County, from my
home in Austell, GA!
First of all, from the time I was a very young, I wanted to know more about
my family background, because my mother had always said the thought her
father's background was German, and I was intrigued because she would use
German words to describe foods she prepared for our family, such as
hausenpfeffer (rabbit) and sauer kraut. She didn't speak much German,
because it wasn't a spoken as a second language at home when she was growing
up. Little did I know when I was growing up as a child, that later, when I
was in the Army, I would wind up being stationed in Frankfurt, Germany,
where I learned to speak a little German, but still not knowing where in
Germany our Schneider family immigrated from until many years later!
The only thing I knew when I started out to learn about our Schneiders was
that my Grandpa had been born in Wells Co., IN, so I googled Wells Co, IN on
the Internet, and up pops the USGenWeb Page for Wells Co., IN. From it, I
gleaned enough information about my Schneiders to order census records, and
from them, learned the name of my Great Grandfather Albert Schneider, and
later, the names of my Great-Great Grandparents, Gottlieb and Mary Elizabeth
(Sauter, Maute, Grozz) Schneider. At that point, curiousity was beginning
to kill me, because I wanted to know more about Wells Co., so I joined The
Wells County Genealogy Society, and contacted Connie Brubaker, the
President, who introduced me to what resources were available in the area.
She helped me get started with my initial research, and helped me understand
the pieces as they started to come together. But as we did more research, we
discovered that my Great Grandmother had roots in Adams Co. as well, and I
wound up talking with Karen Adams, the former Librarian at the Heritage Room
at the Berne Public Library, who added even more pieces to the puzzle,
including that my Great, Great Grandmother had been married three times, and
her first two husbands had died.
Not long after that, I received a call from Charles Joray, the Director of
the Kokomo, IN Library, who said he had the names and death dates of my
Great,Great Grandparents in his family Bible, and wasn't sure why they were
there! Little by little, the picture was becoming clearer about my Grandpa
George's background! About that time, Connie Brubaker told me that the
"Wells County Will Index from 1845-1995 was being published, and she thought
my Great, Great Grandmother's name was listed in it! At that point, I
called Charles Joray, and by reading her will, he discovered that his Great
Grandmother was the daughter of my Great Great Grandmother by one of her
husbands that had died before she married my Great Great Grandfather, which
meant that we are cousins!
By that time, I was so excited about what I had learned, and had enough
leave saved up at work that I could visit Wells Co., IN to see what else I
could find, and meet the wonderful people who had helped me put my family
history together. I was in Wells County about a week, and during that time
I met Karen Adams, who introduced me to Ruth Gottschalk, who knew exactly
where the old Schneider farm had been because one of her ancestors had owned
the property next to it. The Schneider property had been sold, and the new
owners had taken good care of the land. I was the first person from my
mom's family to visit the Wells County in over 80 years, and I am thrilled
that I took the time to take that trip, because it put so many pieces
together for my family, especially my mother, since she had been curious
since she was a little girl about her father's family history. And I got to
meet my new cousin, Charles Joray, and we wound up spending time at the
Wells Co. Courthouse researching wills and looking for other family
information. It was a great trip!
Not long after I returned to Georgia, I received a very excited call from
Charles Joray saying that he had located our Schneider family ancestors in
church records from Tieringen, Germany! Since then, we have been able to
track our Schneider ancestors back to the mid 1700s, but sadly, a church
fire destroyed the earlier records. And we have located passenger records
from the Steamship Holsatia showing when our Schneiders arrived at the Port
of New York in 1869. And Charles and his family visited Tieringen a year or
so ago, which is a dream I have, too.
By now I am certain you are asking why I am sharing all of this information
from Wells County and Adams County on this board! It is because my Great
Grandmother Emily (Gilgen) Schneider was a patient at the Central Indiana
Hospital for the Insane in Indianapolis from 1908 until her death in 1923,
and my Great Grandfather had moved the family to Van Buren Township to be
near her prior to her death. She is buried in the hospital cemetary, and
the next time I am in IN, I plan to go visit her grave.
And finally, I have written this because I have been unable to any
information about my Great Grandfather, Albert Schneider, who was born on 24
June 1865 in Tieringen, Germany. The last information I have about his
whereabouts is gleaned from the 1910 Census, which shows him in Grant
County, Van Buren Twp, along with several of his children. I've been
looking for Albert for several years now, and would appreciate any any
information that you may have about him. I also am looking for my Grandpa
George's youngest sister, Sadie Mae (Schneider) Baker, who was born on
August 9, 1895. The last information I have about Sadie comes the 1930
Census, which shows her in Cass County, Dowigiac City, MI, enumerated with
Roy F. Kellogg, and three children.
Thank you for affording me the opportunity to share my trip back in time
with you all, and hope you are having a great evening!

Regarding finding Rose's children, I am trying.
I have learned that Rose Breedlove, her husband, Earl Breedlove,
and youngest daughter, Jo Ellen Brantley born in 1930)
all died in Highlands County, FL.
I joined that list today to try to find their obituaries, if possible.
They could have been been taken back to Indiana for burial.
I still have work to do.
So far I haven't found anything on Forest (age 12 in 1930)
or Betty Lou (age 8 in 1930). I did find a Forrest Breedlove
but his information did not fit in any way. If Betty Lou married,
it may be hard to find her married name. If I could find a
grandchild, I would be very happy.
Any other tips would be appreciated.

Thank you, Cece, for your wonderful help in researching Rose Glaze.
The marriage record to Earl B. Breedlove is the correct one.
Her age is wrong in the 1930 census, but there are many errors
in such lists. Her death notice agrees with one I received yesterday for
her husband. This info also showed that she had another
child, Jo Ellen, on 11 June 1930. She has passed on
but maybe I can locate a living relative.
What is sad is that I could have met and talked to Rose in person
had I known she was in Florida. I live about 100 miles from Sebring
where she died.
I wish that my grandparents, mother and aunts could have learned what
happened to Rose after Uncle Fred's death. I often heard
them talk about this.
If you find anything else, please let me know.

Elizabeth

Here is the last census I could find on her. Looks like she had a nice

I am a newcomer to this list and hope that someone can help me
find an answer to a mystery I have wondered about for years
and years.
In 1914 My uncle, Fred Ridout, was engaged to Rose Gay Glaze.
I have an address for her in that year as: 825 Eugene Street,
Indianapolis, Indiana. In a March 1913 letter the address was:
1409 Madison Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana.
In January 1914 Fred moved to Lewistown, Montana to work with his
father,
Charles H. Ridout, in electrifying the Milwaukee Railroad.
However, in March he suffered a fatal gunshot accident. He was
19-1/2 years old. He is buried in Lewistown.
According to old letters Rose was broken-hearted. I would like to
find out if she ever married, and if so, when and to whom. When did she
die? I would guess that she would have been about the same age
as Fred. I do not know the names of her parents or any siblings.
