I am seeking information about my great grandfather, John G. Koeppen, b. Sep
1855 in Germany, d. June 1911 in Indianapolis. His first wife was Susan A.
Rogers, b. 1856 in Indiana, d. 1934 in Indianapolis. They divorced sometime
between 1890 and 1900. He then married 10 May 1900 Johanna E. Weil Wulff,
b. 1858 in Germany, d. poss. before 1910. They lived at 1202 and/or1204
Nordyke Ave. in Indianapolis. (One of those addresses was for a saloon that
was originally owned by Conrad C. Wulff) Johanna E. Weil married Conrad C.
Wulff on 23 Jan. 1886 in Indianapolis, he was b. abt. 1841 in Germany, and
d. 1895 in Indianapolis. This was his second marriage, he had been married
to Louisa Burkharst Harbrodt from 1879 until her death in 1881.
This is a very complicated puzzle. If there is anyone who has information
on any of the individuals mentioned above, possible descendants, or about
the property on Nordyke Ave., I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you!
Catherine
I am trying to contact descendants of James Jefferis B 15 December 1832 D
1922 in Indianapolis, IN.
My records indicate he was survived by a son Joseph and daughter Elizabeth.
If information is not available about James, data about his peers would be
desirable: Thomas Shipley, Joseph Moore, Elizabeth Moore, and Sarah Matilda.

There is nothing mentioned about the Underground railroad. As a young girl,
my father belonged to the Historical Society in Indpls. I would work as a
docent at house showings. We were trying to save a three story home with the
only octagonal BLACK WALNUT staircase. It was all black walnut and so were the
panels. It had a widows walk and in the basement a false wall that opened and
could hold 50 slaves. It was used often. The house was torn down for a Shell
filing station which failed within 1 year and was boarded up. Ah progress.
Here is an article I found in the directory.
"A negro was arrested here in December under the fugitive slave law. The
arrest caused much excitement, and being favored by the crowd, he escaped, but
was recaptured after a long chase in the North part of the city, and remanded to
his master in Kentucky, being convoyed thither by a large squad of heavily
armed deputy marshals."

I'm looking for information regarding the Underground Railroad in
Indianapolis. My grandmother who lived from 1900-1996 told me that there
was a secret room under their house on Merrill Street and that she was told
it had been used as part of the Underground Railroad. I'm not sure when
the house was built, I only know that her family was living there by 1870
(and possibly as early as the 1850s). Unfortunately the house no longer
stands as it was purchased by Eli Lilly in the 1950s and was demolished.

Subject: [MARION COUNTY, IN] Marriages between 1935 and 1942
My grandparents Leroy and Myra Carey both married a second time between 1935
and 1942, and I have not been able to find the marriages.
I stopped at the City-County building last year when I was in Indianapolis
and checked the marriage index in the archives in the basement of the
building, but I didn't find the marriages.
Can anyone suggest somewhere else to check? Would people during that period
have sometimes gone to another county? If so, which one?

Mark:
They could have gone to most any county. My grandparents went to
Morgan County and my parents went to Madison County. All lived in Marion County.
Jan in FL.
Mark, my parents lived in Indianapolis and went to Shelby County to get
married in 1946. Maybe it was a smaller place and easier to get around in. I asked
my father why they went to Shelby County and he said they were just out for a
drive and looking for something to do.
If my father is a typical Hoosier all I can say is that Indiana must be the
"Tall Tales" capitol of the world. He keeps us laughing.

That would make sense because I can't find a grave in Indiana. I will pick
up the death certificate as soon as I can.
I can't believe there would not be an obit. My great aunt thought he died
in the summer of 1927 when she was a little girl.
Thanks!!!

Subject: RE: [MARION COUNTY, IN] Bryant Bray
Hi Lori:
I just checked the 1930 Census and Nancy Bray was living at 820 Chadwick
Street which is just South of West McCarty Street. My GGrandparents lived
just straight north of Nancy on West Merrill Street. They were living
within a half mile of each other. The old City Cemetery otherwise known as
Greenlawn Cemetery was within a mile of where they lived and that is where
they buried my GGrandfather in 1882. The only way I located his burial
place was thru his death certificate.
The problem is that the land the cemetery was on was sold and the graves
were supposedly moved to other cemeteries; ie, Crown Hill, Floral Park, Holy
Cross, etc.. I have never found my GGrandfather yet and I believe that he
is still buried under Diamond Chain. Whenever they have construction
projects at the plant, they still find graves that are still there.
Perhaps that is where your Bryant is buried.
The birth and death records are considered confidential and the last time I
was in Indianapolis and tried to access the records they wouldn't let me.
At that time, the only access was thru the Department of Health:

Bryant Bray (my GGrandfather) was b around 1884 in Nelson Ky. and died
around 1926-29? in Marion Indiana.
Oliver was Bryant's son and is listed in the Marion 1930 census with Nancy
as the head of the household where his father, Bryant is missing.
Ollie or Oliver is listed with Sallie as his wife. I've ran up against a
brick wall with Ollie, and haven't been able to find where they went after
this census.
Thanks,
Lori

I couldn't find anybody listed as Ollie Bray or Oliver Bray. There are
dozens and dozens of refererces to the surname Bryant. I might
help me if you could give a bit more detail about those people, such
as dates or other members of the family. Do they appear in any of
the censuses. Anything might help.
