Happy St. Patricks Day everyone!! I hope that your day is a special one.
My Irish family is the SHANAHAN/SHANNAHAN Family from Ireland. I am not
sure if they are from County Cork or County Kerry. Actually, it may be both
as David and Mary Mahoney Shanahan had about 6 kids. The first three were
supposedly born in Cty Cork and the last three were born in County Kerry.
It looks like David was a Surgeon who got his license from the Royal College
of Surgeons in London England in June of 1844. It says on the application
that he is from Tipperary. (The college shared that it was probably the
town of Tipperary) Unfortunately, I have not been able to find them in
Tipperary anywhere. Maybe they lived there just temporarily. Their
childrens names were Julia, Mary, Daniel, Patrick, Ellen #1 and Ellen #2. I
found the last three children being born in St. Bernard's Church in
Abbeydorney, County Kerry, Ireland between 1838-June of 1843.
I believe that Mary and four of their children came to the US from Liverpool
in April of 1850. Julia came in October of 1850. I am not sure when David
and his son Daniel came to the US. I did find a "Surgeon Shanahan" on a
boat coming from Liverpool to the US in November of 1853. I find it
surprising that David would send Mary and a few kids first as I have always
heard that the father goes first and stakes out this territory. :) Then,
sends for the family. I did notice that every one of David and Mary's
children named their first son, JOHN. Maybe there was a JOHN that was
already in the US and took care of them when they arrived. Just a thought.
Stories say that they came into New York and headed to Boston. They
couldn't find work in Boston so they headed to Indianapolis. Julia and Mary
got married there and around 1856 they all headed to Omaha, Nebraska. I
have found records that David, Mary and all their children except Julia
lived there for a couple of years and then headed to St. Joseph, Missouri
where they hung out until November of 1864. At that time, they went back to
Omaha to settle down and enjoy their lives. Most of them are buried in St.
Mary's Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraksa.
If you can share any thoughts or info. on this family, I would love to hear
from you. My e-mail address is suewebb123(a)sbcglobal.net.
Thanks much.

I have discovered a will for Vincent SCOTT of Marion Co, Indiana that names my Josiah D. SCOTT (b 1806, d ?) as the administrator of his will, settled in 1830.
It appears in the writing of the court proceedings that the two had joint business or land ventures.
Does anyone know if Vincent is the father or brother or what his birth date is ? He is supposed to be buried in a cemetery on the banks of the river near Indianapolis.
Josiah had a sister-Hannah Susan (b 1801,d 1854) that married Grimes DRYDEN.
Am very anxious to receive any information about the SCOTT family in this area at that time. Josiah & his family emigrated to NW Missouri around 1848-9 with a group of people from the area by the surname of DRYDEN, BUSH, MERRILL, ROBERTS, MULLIS, KIME. This is all that I know about the family in Indiana.
Any & all information will be kindly accepted.
Best regards, Kathy

Hello everyone. For those who are unfamiliar with the above, as I can, I
submit the text of my Great Aunt's collection of obits and newsy things
for the purpose of "maybe" helping someone break down a "brick wall".
These items were collected from newspapers covering a time frame of the
late 1800s to WW11. They don't always have locations or exact dates in
them, but were collected as my HARRIS family moved from PA., to OH., to
IN. The souces are not always there either since my Great Aunt knew the
people involved and most were related to her and as a result, to me. I
submit these for help as it may apply, not as a notorized documentation
of events. These articles come mainly from Mifflin Co., PA., Tuscarawas
Co., OH and the area surrounding Daviess Co., IN. My Great Aunt lived
almost 90 years, so there are several scrapbooks full to pass on. I hope
this helps someone in their quest.
OBIT
Death From Smallpox
Earl Penrod died at Mitchell on Thursday of last week of Small Pox. He
was buried that night without his parents or any relatives viewing his
body due to the nature of the illiness and to protect others from this
killer illness. He was well known here, where he lived many years. He
leaves a wife and three small children. William K. Penrod , Editor of the
Loogootee Tribune, was a brother. He had $1000.00 insurance.
Mrs. Sarah A. Pershing, wife of Elijah S. Pershing after a lingering
illiness of three months, died of that dreadful disease consumption,
Saturday, June 6th at 8:00 pm., aged 41 years, nine months and 23 days.
The maiden name of the deceased was Sarah Winklepleck, ( a cousin of my
Great Aunt), daughter of George C. and Susan A. Winklepleck. She was
married to Elijah December 9, 1869. She leaves a husband and eleven
children and a large number or relatives and friends to mourn her loss.
The deceased was a member of the U B Church and by her estimable
qualities as a Christian wife and mother endeared herself to a large
circle of friends. She called her husband and children and friends that
were present to her bedside and told them to meet her in Heaven and
admonished her children to be good boys and girls. The funeral took place
Sunday at 3:oopm in Raglesville(IN.), buried at Raglesville Cemetery and
Revs., Scott and Councilman officiating. Rev. Scott of Odon delivered a
very able funeral sermon from the 15 chapter of Corinthians and 55 verse
to a very large concourse of friends.
Josiah P Winklepleck died at his home north of Odon Tuesday Night of
dropsy, at the age of thirty three years. He was the son of Jacob
Winklepleck and leaves father, mother and one brother and two sisters.
The funeral services were held at his home north of Odon Wednesday at
10:00am at Union Chapel with Rev. Key of Scotland in charge. Burial was
made at Union Chapel.
Ann Shafer was born in Flat County, PA., October 4, 1817. Died Decemeber
8, 1890, aged 73 years, 2 mos, and 4 days. When a child, her parents
moved to Ohio. She was married to Jacob Shafer November 24, 1839 and with
him cam e to this area in 1843. The deceased ubited with the M E Church
in 1839 and lived a devoted Christian life. She leaves an aged husband,
one daughter and four grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends
to mourn her loss. Her funeral was preached at Good Hope and her body
laid to rest December 10, 1890.
Dixson H. Bynum, (relative), Indianapolis attorney and former chairman of
the Indiana Industrial Board, killed himself with a shotgun at his his
home, 1527 East 12th Street, Sunday. Services were held at the Ragsdale &
Price Funeral home the next day. Burial will be at Washington, IN, his
former home. Mr. Bynum who was sixty three years odl, was former United
States District Attorney.

Is this the add. for records before 1925?
Thanks to all for their help on the Death Records,
Alice
Sorry about my post for Ohio death certificate. I should have never gotten
out of bed. Have been taking some medicine for virus and didn't even look to
see that you were talking about Marion, Indiana not Marion, Ohio. So sorry.
Thanks Jan,
I have the death certificate for Floribert Stich, also, have his declaration for Naturalization, and passenger list for
the ship he came over on.
What I really need is to find his place of birth in Baden, Germany. In all the documents and census records I've found
for him simply say Germany, or Baden. To get back any further in the Stich genealogy I need to have the name of the town
where he was born. The only place left for me to search is his newspaper obituary, if one exists. I was hoping to find
someone in Indianapolis to do the research for me. It would certainly be worth whatever the cost.
It's a frustrating problem.
Thanks much - fred

Subject: Groves and Gotts
Researching Groves and Gotts in Marion Co., 1820 - ?. Names I have: John Groves, daughter
Elizabeth who married Wm. Hines Gott in Marion Co. in 1828. Daughter Elizabeth Groves and
Wm. Hines Gott both born in KY according to Calif. Census records. There were other Groves in
Marion Co.: David; Henry; John, Daniel; Michael; Wm. GROVE; Eliza (married Lewis Gott);
Lucinda (married Preston Lancaster; Sally (Married Presley Lancaster); Samuel.
The Soundex Code is a system devised so that it would be more convenient to
look up people in a census. The Soundex is used for 'sound a like names'
Such as in my case, Iams, Imes, Iiames along with several other surnames that
sound alike. You can look at a Soundex for a surname in a specific state for
the years 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920. The information provided is the name of
the person, his age, place of birth, his family listing. If you want more
information you can use the numbers in the upper right hand corner to go to
the regular census. By using the Soundex for a state, you do not have to look
at the individual counties which is time consuming and lengthy
Try the INTERNET
http://www.ohiohistory.org/dindex/search.cfm
You can look for the name of your deceased. If they have it, and they should
for this date, there is an application that you can fill out and send $1.00
to them for a copy. Expect to wait 60 to 90 days. You might also try the
Health Department in Marion, Co. I tried to find their address but it is not
listed on the Marion County Web Page.
I've tried everything I can think of to find the town my Great grandfather, Floribert Stich, came from in Baden Germany
without success. Is there someone who would, for a fee, search for his obituary for me? Floribert Stich was born August
02, 1827, and died September 11, 1905 in Indianapolis. I'm hoping the town name will appear in the obituary.
