[MARION COUNTY, IN] RE: Block Family
by Grant & Betty Griffith
The Wm. H. Block Department Store was a "classy" store. I forget how many floors
were in the building, but each level had 1 to 2 departments. Ground level was
mostly cosmetics, handbags, scarves, jewelry, etc. I remember near the elevator
was an exceptional "sweets and candies" counter--did they make their own fudge?
If you have seen (or get a chance to see) the movie "A Christmas Story" (about a
boy in the late 1940's and his Christmas wish for "a Red Rider bebe ?? gun) the
department store scene looks much like the downtown Indianapolis store.
Every kid in central Indiana who had the chance of seeing the moving Christmas
windows at Block's and Ayres during the Christmas season, can really feel the pull
of nostalgia when watching that movie.
