All of the cemeteries of Decatur Township, Marion County,
Indiana, were read by the Genealogical Society of Marion
County in 1997. These
readings have been published in a book titled "Cemetery
Readings of Decatur Township", available through the
Society.
If anyone has access to the book, I'd appreciate a lookup
for Thomas Foster Armstrong and wife, Maria (McGuire)
Armstrong. He died August 2, 1899; she was probably still
living, but elderly, at that time. They lived in West
Newton and in Maywood, but I don't know which cemetery
they're buried in. I'd also like to know if there are other
Armstrong and McGuire listings in the book.
Many thanks.

Anita, I live in Texas and had not heard about the bodies found at Diamond
Chain. Is this where the old Greenlawn Cemetery was? I had been told that
all the bodies were moved by the historian at Crown Hill.

Hello everyone.
It's been awhile since I've posted. I have nothing documented to prove Judge
Jacob Smith was really a Judge in Indianapolis, Indiana, in the late 1800's
only his son, also a Jacob Smith's death certificate which says this was
"so", and that word came from his second wife. Who Knows???
Is there someone out there that would be willing to look the records up for
me, if there are records available?
I would be very grateful.
Sincerely,
Lynn DeTrano

Hello Listers!
If some one has access to Washington Park North Cemetery book in Indianapolis, would they please look up Patricia Smith. Her husband was John A. Smith who died on July 26, 1981 and is buried there. Patricia Smith died after John and should be buried with him. I would like the death date so I might get a death cert and obit.
thanks!

I have now been informed that Edith Shirley, not Eileen Cissell, was the art
teacher at P.S. 57 (corner of Ritter and E. Washington St. in Indianapolis) in
1931-32. Please disregard my prior request for information re: Mrs. Cissell.
If anyone has a school photo that includes Mrs. Shirley, I would appreciate your
letting me know.
My apologies for the confusion.

Our local library is open on Sundays for checking out books only.
Today I was busy all day with my daughter. But, tomorrow for sure I will
order the film. I hope it doesn't take six weeks.
I wrote to Butler College to see if they have any information they are
willing to part with.
All in all, I think I am making progress.
Thanks to all who sent clues, information and suggestions.
Gratefully,

Hello,
I will check to see if I may have that in some of my files. I
didn't realize that Mrs. Burns -- I think Mrs. --- taught at school 57. I
went to school 33 and she was the principal there in 1957, 58 and maybe
longer... I will have to pull out my records.
She was a wonderful lady!

Does anyone have a copy of the P. S. 57 eighth grade class of 1931-1932? I'm
looking for a photo of Mrs./Miss Burns' homeroom class or the entire eighth
grade class.
Also, does anyone have a photo of the "stained glass" panels (actually parchment
paper painted to resemble stained glass) that were used as a Christmas
decoration above the front doors of the school from 1931 until some time in the
1950s or later? They were painted by my mother while she was a student at the
school. Our family would love to have a copy of any existing photos.
Many thanks,
Linda Johnson
Someone has kindly informed me that the art teacher at P.S. 57 was Eileen
Cissell, according to a 1930 directory. Does anyone have a school photo (any
year) that includes her?
Thanks,
Linda Johnson
I forgot to mention in my reply to Phil Di Matteo that it would definitely be
worth borrowing the microfilm from the Indiana State Library rather than just
requesting a photocopy of the obituary. Because of the circumstances of his
relative's death, the newspapers probably ran a news article that would include
details not reported in the obituary. In a similar case, I found that the Star,
News and Times each included details omitted from the other newspapers'
coverage.

Thanks for the information.
I'll have letters in the mail tomorrow AM.
I just tried to call our library, but they don't open until 1 PM.
The people on this site have been very helpful.
I have traced my main line back to when they arrived in the USA, about 1837.
I am now trying to fill in the branches for the fun of it.
Fred M. SELLMEYER was grandfather's twin brother.
I appreciate your time and effort to answer my question.

Hello Marion County researchers,
The contact email address has been changed for the Marion
County, Indiana GenWeb page and also the administrators address for this mail
list. The changes may have caused some
messages to come back to you and some to bounce.
I apologize for this inconvenience. I do believe that everything has been
changed now and there should not be any further problems.
If you have any problems, please let me know at
MarionCoIN(a)aol.com
If you had submitted a message to the mail list today (April 1st) and it came
back to you, please feel free to resubmit that message.

The Indiana State Library lists its Indiana newspaper
holdings by county and date at the following website:
www.statelib.lib.in.us/WWW/INDIANA/newspaper.HTML
You can borrow copies of microfilmed newspapers from them
through your local public library's Interlibrary Loan
service, usually at no charge. The website tells how to do
that and also how to request photocopies from the library.
If you don't know the approximate date of death (at least
month and year), you might contact the Indianapolis Star.
The Star and News--the major dailies for the time period
you're interested in--maintained a joint clippings library
for many years. Obituaries were indexed for some years but
not all. I believe there is a charge for obtaining
photocopies of articles from them, but I'm not sure whether
or not they charge for an index lookup. See:
www.starnews.com/custserv/contact.html
for information on contacting the Star.

Hello everyone!
I am new to the list and don't actually have anyone but my parents (who came
to the county as teens and twentysomethings) to count as Marion County
ancestors, but since I live here I thought perhaps I could be of some help to
those of you who live outside our county.
I would like to recommend a site to refer to for all cemetery location and
contact questions. It is fairly new and being added to as new information
becomes available.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ingsmc/Pages/Cemeteries_of_Marion_County.htm
This is one of the helpful pages at the Genealogical Society of Marion
County's website.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ingsmc/
There are several cemeteries that have been "read" posted there. Check under
the heading of Marion County Data in the links on the left.
I hope this helps others with questions about cemeteries.
