Does anyone on this list have a connection with this ELKS Lodge? My
husband's GGrandfather was Secretary of the Old Knights and Ladies of Honor
from 1913 until it's reorganization in 1915 a year later he became secretary
of the B.P.O.E. another version said he was secretary of the B.P.O.E. for
the last 25 years. According to his obituary William G Taylor, died Thursday
Oct 30, 1941 " will lie in state in th Elks Lodge Room in the Antlers Hotel
where services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m." I would love to
know more about his life time and would absolutly love to connect with any of
his living descendents. Sue Taylor mamasnert(a)aol.com

Does anyone know this RAY gentleman?
The Evening News, Indianapolis, IN
Monday, March 27, 1871, pg 1
The funeral of Oscar W. Ray took place at Anderson last Wednesday.
He committed suicide recently at Greensburg, Pennsylvania, after an
unsuccessful attempt to kill his wife.
If anyone is a member of INMADISO-L, would you be so kind as to forward
this obit to that list?

Hi Robin:
I just saw your listing on the Marion County site about the Tate,
Klepfer Cemetery. I am related to some of the Klepfers that are buried
there. I have not been to the cemetery. I live in California. I had
intended to go the last time I was bzck in Indiana, but did not get
there.
Are you in contact with a Ralph (think that is his first name) Klepfer?
One of the sources that I received Klepfer information from had met with
him and went to the cemetery quite a few years ago.

The Ebenezer Lutheran Cemetery at 42nd & Millersroad, behind the current
Baptist Church (old Ebenezer Lutheran) is in dire need of help on the
tombstones!
Several of the tombstones have been knocked over or damaged over the years.
Many of the stones are for burials from 1727-early 1900's.
Most of the families there are from Frederick County, Maryland-New Harmony,
IN to Lawrence.
Familes included are: Bower, Brown, Easterday, Mowrey, Shartz(s), Ringer,
Pressly, Leatherman, English, Schnee, Smay & many others. Many of the stones
are beautiful & very old. Even a large stone in the center marking the
history of the church.
One of the large stones had a very large open bible on top, which has been
knocked off or fallen off to the ground.
Some of the stones were found this summer down by Fall Creek!! 2 of them
were my ancestors & I couldn't find them at all in my last trip this summer.
Several of the stones are growing out of or are covered by bushes & trees.
Please don't let the history of these stones disintegrate!!
Thank you for any help you could provide.

Lynda,
I got the same type of birth certificates for my grandchildren when I went
to the Oregon vital records office here in Portland. I asked the clerk if
they didn't put "all" information on the certificates anymore. He told me
that those were the "long" forms and I would have to ask for the "long" form
if that was what I wanted. Maybe it's the same in IN - it's worth a try!

Four or five years ago when I went to the state vital records office in
Portland to get my grandchildren's birth certificates, they gave me the same
short form as Lynda is talking about. When I questioned the clerk about
why it didn't have all of the information on it, he told me I needed to ask
for the "long" form if I wanted all of that information, so maybe that's
what you need to do for IN. It's worth a try!

My husbands parents are both dead. We sent to IN to get his birth
certificate and what came back was a 1/2 sheet of paper--all typed with ONLY
the name of the parents, the state of their birth, and my husbands name and
birth date. Is this normal for IN? All birth certificates I have seen have
the age of parents, their birth dates, their occupation, hospital where
child was born, etc. In other words, there is usually a lot of genealogy
info on the birth cert. We have sent to both the state of IN as well as the
Marion County Health Dept for a birth certificate. Both places sent the
same sort of birth certificate. Are we asking for the wrong thing? The
County birth certificate did give us a page and volume number as well as a
certificate number. If I call the MCHD and give them that page and volume
number, will they tell me what is on the page? Can anyone tell me how to
go about getting what I am going to call a long form birth certificate (one
that will have all info on it) from either Marion County or the state of IN?
Or does IN only give what I call the short form birth cert.? Any help will
be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi Robert,
Your address caught my attention -- my grandparents lived at 1434 Spruce
for many years, and other family members lived in the Fountain Square area!
If I remember correctly, the area across the street and directly east is
vacant. I believe it forms a triangular lot bordered by Pleasant Run
Parkway and Spruce Street. Your ggp's may have lived on Pleasant Run
Creek, which runs alongside the Parkway. I'd be glad to take a picture
when I visit Indy next -- but it probably won't be until February.
btw: my Fountain Square families (beginning about 1880) are: Rothert,
Hukriede, Meyer, Carpenter, and Brooks.

Happy 2000 listers ...
I'm searching for descendants of a Peter Gates, who married my
g.grandfather's sister, Elizabeth Surber. The marriage took place in
Shelby County, IN 8-18-1836. The husband's name was listed as Peter
"Gates or Getts." By 1870 they were spelling the name GATES. Peter is
believed to have been of German-speaking Swiss ancestry, as was
Elizabeth.
By 1850, Elizabeth "GETTS" appears in the MARION County IN census as a
head of household. For various reasons, I know this to be the same
Elizabeth who married Peter. They are known to have had two
hearing-impaired sons who were both said to have been killed during the
Civil War, but do not know if it was in battle. The boys were not in the
household in 1850. Don't know the boy's names.
In 1850, here was a 12-year old girl with Elizabeth named JESSIE or
something similar. (The writing on the original census image is
difficult to make out. The I, the T, and the J look very much alike.)
Elizabeth had impaired hearing as did her two sons. By the 1870's the
family was spelling their name GATES according to records about other
relatives kept by the deaf education system. It is believed that
Elizabeth and Peter had several other children.
I'd like to contact anyone who may be related to this family. What
happened to Peter? and little Jessie? Were there really other children?
