Hi List,
I have always known that my great-grandmother Bess C. Harlow was the matron at the Ruth C.
Sabin Home at 1603 Michigan Ave. in the late 1920's and into the 1930's. I
assumed that meant she was kind of like the "house mother."
However, when I accessed the 1930 census, it shows her as matron, that the house was
OWNED, and that the value was $70,000.00. Does this necessarily mean that SHE owned it??
Or does it mean that the house "was owned" by SOMEONE-- not necessarily her.
Can anyone with a familiarity with the history of the home address this question? She is
listed as "Matron - H" (meaning head) of household in that column. It is line
45, ED 46 -8, sheet 2 of the LaPorte 1930 census.
Thanks for any insight you can provide.
