A few months ago, in some distant library, I found a La Port County
index of marriages for the 1800's. In it, I found a person I'm
interested in. There was listed a marriage for Welcome J. Cox, age 19,
married in 1863.
What I need to know is whether marriage licenses (or whatever) required
applications at that time which may reveal more information. I have
been trying to find this individual's mother, who I believe was in La
Porte county but who had remarried.
Incidentally, I believe Welcome J. Cox is the same person as Welcome
Jerome who lived in Westville during the late 1800's. Cox was (I
believe) his mother's name after a second marriage and was the name he
used while growing up. His mother's sister also lived in Westville; she
was Lucinda Lewis, wife of Joseph and mother of Milton.
If anyone can shed light on marriage records for the 1860's era, please
let me know.
