. Not sure I've used it before. But
it does have some search flaws in that when I try to search on Hively I
get "hives" and even "have" :-(
I do have an abstraction of the court petition document you found
summarized in the newspaper. The court document lists the children and
their state of residence and by 1847 they were all living in Indiana.

Subject: Re: [INLAGRAN] LaGrange birth & death records 1840-1850
Just a thought. Don't assume they are both dead. From personal experience, even when
the wife claims to be a widow, the husband might just be "dead to her". I
couldn't find a 1895-1900 death certificate for my gr grandfather in Kansas because he
was very much alive and living with another woman in Oklahoma. Didn't die until
1925.Â
I checked Chronicling America and found this legal notice in an Ohio paper 1848. May be
some siblings or relatives of Emanuel Hively as he is mentioned along with several others.
If you don't have this, it may give you some
hints.http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn87070038/1848-02-25/ed-1/s...
The LaGrange County Public Library
http://www.lagrange.lib.in.us/genealogy.html has
Microfilmed LaGrange County wills, 1842-1923 which may be of use. According to their
site:
"The LaGrange County Public Library does have part-time genealogy volunteers on
staff. We will attempt to answer any genealogy requests that we receive, but we ask
genealogists to request only very specific pieces of information, please. In addition,
please supply as much background information as possible, so we'll have something to
work with."
Happy hunting

Subject: [INLAGRAN] LaGrange birth & death records 1840-1850
Do birth, death, burial, or probate records exist for LaGrange county
for the period of 1840-1850?
I have the Nov 18, 1841 marriage record of Emanuel Hively who married
Lucinda Carney in LaGrange County.
In 1843 they had a son Miles Benjamin Hively born in 1843 in Indiana
according to his Civil War registration.
On June 15, 1845, (or June 15, 1846) they had a second son John Hively,
born in LaGrange according to his Civil War pension papers.
I'm assuming both parents died before the 1850 census as Miles B. Hively
is living with his maternal grandmother in Noble Co., Indiana, and John
Hively is living with the elderly couple John and Elizabeth Carney in
Clay Township, LaGrange County in the 1850 census.
The family story passed down in John's family was Emanuel Hively was
killed when a tree he was cutting fell on him.
Thanks for any help or suggestions,
Bonnie Weisel
