That would be great if you could locate an obituary. You and I have communicated on
several posts, so I will update you a bit more on my Lyman Kenyon, c 1814, who MAY be a
close relative to your Olive Kenyon.
I got interested in Barnabus Kenyon, because he lived in La Grange, Indiana around the
same time that the parents (Daniel and Eliza Phelps) of Melissa Phelps, born 1821, New
York lived in Steuben, Indiana. Melissa married Lyman Kenyon 30 Jun 1843, but I do not
know where they married. According to one source, her parents moved there in 1835; they
are listed on the 1840 census as living there. So it is possible that one of Barnabus'
sons met and married Melissa there in Indiana, as there were virtually no other Kenyons
living there around that time.I am basically trying to rule him in or out.
Also, on a second possible hypothesis, I note that Steuben, Indiana is very close to
Michigan. I note a relative of yours, Freeman Kenyon, who may have been married to Mercy
Titus and Lydia Withey. One of his sons, Arnold may have been the father of your Olive,
possibly of my Lyman. He was also the father of Sarah Kenyon, who married Noah Briggs
(1807 - 1874) and Elijah Kenyon, who married Mary Briggs, sister to Noah.
I digress, but there was a book written on the Family of Noah Briggs, which I will try to
get a copy of next month.
Title: "Noah Briggs of Allegan County, Michigan : his ancestors and his descendants;
including the families of Ruth Duel (Briggs, Tanner), Sarah Kenyon and Susan Rebecca
Fisk" by Marcia Udell and Susan Udell
Description: Family history of Noah Briggs (1807-1874), born probably in Rutland Co.,
Vermont. He married Sarah Kenyon (1808-1854) ca. 1827, and had six male children. They
moved westward, finally settling in Michigan, where Sarah died. Noah remarried in 1855 to
Lucinda (Putnam) Brownell. Early in 1865, they purchased land in Kalamazoo Township, where
Noah died in 1874 and Lucinda in 1892.
Anyway, to get to my point. Noah traveled from New York westward, possibly going near
Indiana, then to Michigan. I am exploring the possibility that my Lyman Kenyon may have
been involved in this venture, meeting Melissa Phelps in Indiana and getting married there
or in Michigan. It is a long shot, but worth exploring.
I hope I didn't confuse the issue with two separate strings of thought. One being the
possibility of Barnabus being Lyman's father; the other being Arnold Kenyon or another
son of Freeman Kenyon being the father of Lyman Kenyon.
Any help you can be with obtaining an obituary for Barnabus Kenyon, would be appreciated.
He had two sons, in the age range of my Lyman Kenyon.
Marilyn Kenyon
