Message Board Post:
Does anyone know if there are any records of the teachers employed by schools in LaGrange
County in the late 1880s? I was searching for the college record of my great-grandfather,
Elmer Bower, and found that there was one in the (formerly named) Tri-State College in
Angola in the early 1890s, but he gave his home as being "LaGrange, Indiana".
My Elmer grew up in DeKalb County. However, I think it is possible that he may have
gotten his first teaching job in LaGrange County, before he went to college and then might
have listed that as his residence when he entered the college in Angola. There don't
seem to be any other "Elmer Bower"s of the same approximate age and location to
be the one in the Tri-State school records. All the others are either too young or too
old. So, I'm just trying to see if there is some explanation that would connect my
Elmer Bower with LaGrange County. Were teacher employment lists maintained from that
time?
