Here's a thought. Have you tried tracing any of Asa's siblings to see if they may
have journed with him to Indiana, I see he bought property in Iowa in 1849 under the name
of Asa Adams so I seriously doubt that he used the name John in one state and Asa in
another. Try tracing Harriet's Root and John's roots. See if she or Asa show up
any where else in any sort of records for that time period, besides census records. See
if John bought property.
Remember the Indian Wars (1817-1858) were going on during that time in the
area.Especially the Black Hawk War (I believe that was the name of the big one mentioned
most.) Check any records for possible involvement.
I also see that LaGrange County seperated from Elkart County. Check in Elkhart county
for any genealogy during that time period you may find a hint. Try the following web site
to see if any of the children were buried in either Elkhart or LaGrange county cemetaries
during that time. It will take a lot of digging but you may run across sometime that may
help you decide if John is Asa or if they are two actual seperate people. My best guess
is that they are two seperate individuals.
WEB SITE:
http://www.interment.net/us/in/index.htm. This is a good site for almost any
state if you know the counties. You can find other genealogy on this site with a little
digging, not only for cemeteries but sometimes other history or genealogy of the counties
and the state.
I found several cemeteries listed in different counties for the same town, due to
seperation of counties, depending on the date of burial. Also check the history of the
state and when the counties were actually formed and then check the surrounding county it
was formed out of to see if they could be any info to lead you to a next step.
Remember that just because a county was formed outside your specific time period, the
original county that was split may hold clues for what you are looking for. I'm not
sure people were aware of the split till long afterwards.
Good hunting.
