In the 1850 US Census for West VanBuren Twp., LaGrange Co., IN, there appears a Andrew
Weatherwax, age 13 and a Henry Weatherwax, age 14. They were both working on the farm of a
John DALTON. This listing can be found on Page 156, Dwelling #1061, Family #1057, Lines
28-35.
We now know that the Andrew mentioned is Andrew Jefferson Weatherwax, son of my great
great grandfather's brother, John Weatherwax and his wife, Charity Maria
"Maria" DAYTON. John (1807-1844) and Charity (1810-1848) both died in St. Joseph
Co., MI and are buried in Morrison Cemetery, Fabius Twp.
After their deaths, John and Maria's eldest child, Mary Jane Weatherwax, (1834-1906)
moved from St. Joseph Co., MI to Ontario Co., NY at some point after the 1850 Census (when
she was enumerated as a domestic working for the Norman family), became the third wife of
Levi GIFFORD in 1855, bore him eight children and lies buried in Woodlawn Cemetery,
Canandaigua, Ontario Co., NY. Andrew Weatherwax (1837-1902) married Lucy Ann ELLIS in 1864
at White Pigeon, St. Joseph Co., MI. He served as a Private, then Corporal in Battery F of
the 1st Michigan Light Artillery in the Civil War and his pension file is very detailed.
Andrew and Lucy had four natural children, as well as an adopted daughter. Andrew died 2
April, 1902 at White Pigeon and lies buried in the White Pigeon Twp. Cemetery.
Because of the early demise of both John and Maria (Dayton)Weatherwax, I have had to
identify their children using death, marriage and pension records. They were married 3
November, 1831 in New York (probably Montgomery Co) so were married just shy of 13 years
when John died at the age of 37. Their probable son, Henry, is our current loose end and
East VanBuren Twp., Lagrange Co., IN is the last recorded location we have for him. If
anyone out there happens to know what might have happened to this Henry Weatherwax, born
circa 1836 in New York or Michigan, please let me know!
