I am a descendant of Olmstead Lewis. I find him first in the 1830 census of Clarence,
Erie, NY, with m <5, m 20-30, 2f <5, f 5-10, f 20-30. In EARLY SETTLERS OF NEW YORK
STATE (p. 142), he is listed as taking the Temperance Pledge in Newstead, Erie, NY in
1837.
He appears in the 1840 census in Greenfield, LaGrange, IN with m <5, m 5-10, m 10-15, m
40-50, f 5-10, f 10-15, 2 f 15-20. The 1850 and 1860 census entries have been posted on
this board.
I descend from Olmstead's daughter Emily, b. abt 1821, NY. She married, first, a Mr.
Ladd with whom she had a daughter Emma J, b. 1850. She married, second, 17 Jan 1854,
LaGrange Co, Anson Clark. They had a son, William David Clark, b. 1859, LaGrange, who is
my ancestor. I suspect that she married a third time, 7 Jan 1860, Berrien Co., MI, Andrew
Clymer, had a son Andrew M. Clymer, b. Aug 1864, Berrien Co., and died before 16 Aug 1869,
when Andrew Clymer remarried.
Olmstead's second daugher, Eliza Ann, married James M. Sprague, had two daughers, and
died between 1850 and 1852.
Wait Lewis' information has been posted on this board. He was also known as William
Morgan Lewis.
The next son was Robert H. Lewis, b 1832 - 1835, NY, died 1896, Clam Lake, Wexford, MI.
He married Mary Jane Smith, 2 Jan 1864, Sturgis, St. Joseph, MI, and they had four
children.
The next son was George W. Lewis. I have been unable to track him past 1850.
The last child was Lafayette Lewis, also known as James. He was born Dec 1841, died 1910,
and is buried in Weesaw, Berrien, MI. He married Emaline Permalia Reynolds, 12 Aug 1866,
Noble Co., IN, daughter of Nathan Reynolds and Ada Maranda Clark, sometime residents of
LaGrange. They had three children. He served in Co. K of the 20th Indiana Infantry (if
I'm decoding the records correctly).
Olmstead married Hila Ann Reynolds, 24 Oct 1854, in LaGrange. She may have married David
Anderson on 12 May 1870 in Berrien Co., MI, in which case Olmstead was dead by then. I
have been unable to find the name of his first wife or his parents. I suspect an Olmstead
bride earlier in the family tree to explain his name. It may have been his middle name,
as two of his sons used different names at different times.
