For the past 10 years or so I have been searching for the parentage and
ancestors of Washington ADAMS born in Ohio in 1811. We find him in the
1840 and 1850 census in Indiana. In the history of Lagrange County
Indiana he is found as one of the early settlers even at that young
age. In the 1850 census he is shown with his wife Laura (Hill) ADAMS
and their three children: Mary J. Adams, Moses Adams and Martha Adams.
Laura HILL was the daughter of Dr. Moses HILL. She was born in NY. In
1832 Washington ADAMS married Laura HILL in Lagrange county, IN.
In the 1830 census for Elkhart Indiana there is a John ADAMS shown with
his family. One was a male between the ages of 15-20. This would match
my Washington ADAMS age group. Under the John ADAMS listing is the name
Asa ADAMS. Or at least it looks like "Asa". on the next page of that
census is shown the Dr. Moses J HILL family.
I have checked out two Washington Adams' and ruled them out. One was in
Warren County, Ohio and the other was in Muskingkum County, Ohio. Both
of these died in those counties. My Washington Adams died in Mt
Carroll, IL in 1863.
I feel that the John Adams who was shown in the 1830 census in Elkhart
County, IN is the most promising parentage of my Washington, but I
cannot find where he came from. He was between the age of 50-60 in 1830
and does not appear in the 1840 census - most likely passed on. Is
there anyone out there tracing that John Adams family or the Asa Adams
family???
