I have been doing a lot of research on the Wesaw's in southwest Michigan. Most of the
research I find says Wesaw (also known as Chief Mota (or Motay)Wesaw (Wezo)married a
daughter of Topenibee.They had 5 sons 1.Lewis b. May 21,1814 2.Michael(also known as
Mitchell,Kechee Wezo and Big) b. 1820 died 1875. Samuel Born 1824. Motay born 1825, and
John born 1831.
Michael had 2 sons 1871 Frank by his first wife Chemogsa and James 1874 by his second wife
Suzanna Pumphrey(Noble-Rouse.
Most of the references I have seen report that Chief Motay Wesaw was killed in September
of 1836. One sourse reports he was shot by one trying to break up a fight between two
young men at their camp in Vilonia in Cass county. A few others report he was killed in
Vilonia by one of his sons who had been drinking and was upset over the treaty that was
signed in 1832 giving up their homeland. It is said that Chief wesaw was burried in the
moccasin bluffs overlooking the St. Joe River in Buchanan MI He was Burried sitting
upright.
