Message Board Post:
First, it looks like you are looking in the wrong newspaper for the obits that are listed
on the rootsweb page. For example, Edwin Higbee obituary that is listed as being in the 1
July 1920 is in the Milford Mail newspaper.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inkosciu/MilfordObits.html If you went to the Warsaw Public
Library you were looking at the Warsaw Daily Times. The Warsaw Daily Times has not been
indexed yet, so I cannot tell you what date the obituary is on ... or even if there is
one. The Warsaw Library does not have the Milford Mail newspaper on microfilm there. The
genealogy section has all Milford Mail on microfilm.
Olive Higbee's obituary is listed in the Pierceton Newspater, not the Warsaw
newspaper.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inkosciu/PiercetonObits.html Again the Warsaw library
does not have any of the Pierceton Newspaper on microfilm. The 30's or 40' have
not been index in the Warsaw newspapers. The genealogy section has all of the Pierceton
Newspaper on microfilm.
So it appears you are taking our index for obituaries and trying to find them in the wrong
newspapers. Using the index right you should be able to find an obituary within 5-10
minutes at the most.
Our county has had the following newspapers: Akron Mentone News, Northern Indiana Co-Op
News, Tri-County Gazette, Community Farm News, Mentone Gazette, Milford Mail, Pierceton
Record, Pierceton Press, Silver Lake and Syracuse. The Kosciusko County Genealogy Section
Library has all of these on microfilm. All are indexed but Syracuse, and that one is
almost done.
At the Warsaw Library you will find Northern Indianaian Newspaper, Indianian Republican
Newspaper, Warsaw Daily Times, & the Warsaw Times Union. Some of the Warsaw Times
Union have been indexed, but not all. The others that are listed have not been indexed.
The Genealogy Section asks $3.00 for an obituary to help cover the cost of having a
library that serves the public. We have the cost of copy machines, a microfilm
reader/printer, paper, toner, etc. We also have the cost of the microfilm and the up keep
on all of the original county record books. With out some money coming in we can not keep
the genealogy library open.
I hope this helps you understand how the obituary index works. Also why we ask for a small
fee.
