Walter, you've requested from the National Archives the "pension" files.
There are actually two distinct set of files for Civil War Soldiers, the
Pension Files and the Military Service Record. There may not be a pension
file for every soldier that served in the Civil War. But there should be a
Military Service record for every soldier. On the form that you send to
the National Archives there is an area to check on the form as to whether
you are requesting the Pension records or the military records. The
National Archives will only send you one of these at a time, you need to
send in two different forms to get both files.
Additionally, I would make sure you fill in as much information on the form
that you can.
Finally, there is always a chance that the file for your William E. DeMoss
was lost, misfiled, the name mispelled, etc that prevents NARA from finding
it.

I am researching the DeMoss family name and I found in the Kosciusko
County genweb site, a section entitled "Kosciusko County Men in the
Civil War", which listed three DeMoss men who served as Volunteers in
the Union Army. I sent off to the National Archives for pension records
on all three. Yesterday I got back my first reply and it said they had
no files for the individual, William E. DeMoss. Any suggestions as to
how this may have happened?????
